Apprentice Operator

The Apprentice Operator is responsible for activities related to the operation of a coal‑fired 1700 MW plant that operates 24/7 on a rotating shift basis. The role covers safe operation of the generating units, including the boiler, turbine, condensers, coal pulverizers, ash removal systems, and auxiliary equipment. The candidate must successfully complete the Power Plant Operator Entrance Knowledge Exam and pass a pulmonary function/respirator fit test.

Residency within a reasonable distance from the facility is required for callouts and emergencies.

• Perform duties in a safe manner.
• Operate and perform lubrication and inspection of boilers and turbine auxiliary equipment.
• Operate ash and mill pyrite equipment.
• Conduct daily inspections and rounds of equipment.
• Isolate and tag equipment as required.
• Assist in troubleshooting operational problems.
• Apply knowledge of steam power plant operations and basic power plant principles to daily decision‑making and work tasks.
• Operate computers and printers.
• Discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from the operating system.
• Perform tasks without supervision during inspections.
• Operate various switches and understand their impact on operation.
• Meet physical requirements, including standing, walking, climbing, squatting, reaching above the head, and lifting up to 50 pounds while walking up to 10 feet.

• High school diploma or equivalent; post‑secondary education in power generation is desirable.
• Successful completion of the Power Plant Operator Entrance Knowledge Exam.
• Team‑oriented, operating economically, efficiently, safely, and within state/federal compliance.
• Knowledge of basic electrical theory.
• Understanding of basic cause and effect logic.
• Competent computer skills.
• Average problem‑solving skills.
• Availability for callouts and emergencies.
• Good communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
