Overview
Renewables Technician – Support of inverter‑based resources (I ) at multiple RRE Solar and/or Battery Storage sites across the Carolinas. The role includes day‑to‑day operations, preventive maintenance, startup activities, and integration of new sites into Duke Energy’s operations framework.
Key Responsibilities- Perform daily operational rounds and maintenance activities, including the development and execution of complex Lock‑Out‑Tag‑Outs (LOTOs).
- Operate SCADA, telemetry, inverter, battery, and array systems, and conduct routine preventive maintenance.
- Execute all LOTO tasks for maintenance, providing documentation, isolation, verification, and leading work crews.
- Oversee contractor activities and communicate status with Operations Centers (RROC, TCC, ECC).
- Travel to multiple sites, with a requirement of approximately 50% regional travel within North and South Carolina.
- Perform rotational on‑call duties to support peak and baseload generation needs.
- Maintain Environmental, Health & Safety records, spreadsheets, and documentation.
- Commission new sites, including punch‑list activities, procedure development, system walk‑downs, and start/stop operations across branded control systems.
- Serve as integration lead for new sites, ensuring compliance with RRE standards and coordinating hand‑offs from construction to operations.
- Prepare service reports for site visits, emergency repairs, equipment modifications, and improvement investigations.
- Enforce safety protocols, O&M standards, and BES site requirements, ensuring a safe, event‑free work environment.
- Technical or Associate’s Degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Basic level: 2 years related experience or higher education.
- Renewables Tech I – Experience with basic troubleshooting and high‑voltage switching.
- Renewables Tech II – 1 year related experience or 3 years with equivalent education.
- Renewables Tech III – 3 years relevant experience or 3 years with equivalent education.
- Must read and understand OEM manuals, technical drawings, and warranty agreements.
- Strong knowledge of instrumentation, electrical/electronic controls, and photovoltaic/Battery systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot from schematics and use electrical test equipment.
- Experience with SCADA/EMS control systems, PV system design, and power distribution.
- Knowledge of National Electrical Code and basic HVAC fundamentals.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background checks, NERC CIP, and physical assessment.
- Must live within approximately 30 miles of assigned site(s) and meet the weight restriction of 275 lbs.
- Fiber optic network troubleshooting.
- Experience with EMERSON Ovation or similar control systems.
- EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification.
- Exposure to mechanical, civil, or other craft disciplines.
Field mobility is required. The role involves frequent site visits, high‑temperature work environments, standing, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., and using hands and feet to handle objects. No overnight stays except for training or special assignments.
LocationsSupports multiple renewable energy sites, including Asheville Solar/BESS, Craggy BESS, Maiden Creek Solar, Gaston Solar, Beaverdam Solar, and others across North and South Carolina.
