, a global leader in manufacturing fiber reinforced composite products, has an immediate opportunity for a Product Design Engineer at our Walkerton, Indiana location (90 miles east of Chicago). Polygon was founded in 1949, working with advanced composite materials during World War II. Polygon’s original patents for composite self-lubricating bearings in the mid 1960s stand as the hallmark in journal bearing technology.
Polygon’s innovative approach and ongoing research and development has resulted in multiple patents and the creation of highly engineered products supporting a wide range of industries including medical, construction, agriculture, oil and gas and electrical markets.
Polygon is seeking a Product Design Engineer to support our rapidly expanding industrial products group. Polygon provides fiber reinforced composite products to the transportation, agricultural, construction, and material handling markets providing solutions for some of the largest companies in the world.
The successful candidate will have experience in product and process development of nonmetallic materials and products, specifically fiber reinforced composites. A BS degree in engineering, materials science or other comparable science is required. We are looking for associates who enjoy working in a collaborative team environment and possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills with attention to detail. Candidates should be self-driven, self-motivated, and collaborative to seek out solutions to complex manufacturing challenges.

The Product Design Engineer is responsible for the analysis, design, and development of fiber-reinforced composite products to meet customer and market needs. This role involves defining product requirements, developing innovative design solutions, and collaborating across departments to ensure product performance, manufacturability, and customer satisfaction. The engineer will support ongoing product development initiatives, provide technical expertise to both internal teams and external customers, and drive continuous improvement in design and production processes.
Duties & Responsibilities- Define and document product requirements with clarity and precision.
- Review customer applications and provide design recommendations tailored to performance and cost needs.
- Meet with customers to present technical details of composite products.
- Provide engineering support to customers, sales teams, and manufacturing operations.
- Identify new markets and applications for composite products and contribute to growth initiatives.
- Recognize product and technology gaps and propose innovative solutions.
- Analyze, design, and validate material and product solutions through modeling, prototyping, and testing.
- Collaborate with production teams to improve product manufacturability and efficiency.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and quality standards.
- Perform all additional duties as assigned.

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field.
- Strong understanding of material science with emphasis on fiber-reinforced composites.
- Experience in product and process development of nonmetallic/composite products preferred.
- Background in product validation, structural design, and mechanical testing desirable.
- Familiarity with CAD design tools and engineering analysis software.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
