The role of a bridge engineer encompasses a range of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the integrity and safety of bridge structures, including bridge design and structural analysis aligned with PennDOT standards and AASHTO specifications. The engineer assists in routine and special bridge inspections, documents findings, develops repair and rehabilitation plans with cost estimates, and collaborates with engineering teams, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure safety and design compliance.
Proficiency in bridge management systems and software tools is required for data collection, reporting, and project tracking. Preparation of technical reports, design drawings, and documentation is essential for internal reviews and regulatory compliance.
In roadway engineering, professionals create detailed design plans, specifications, and cost estimates for highway projects, ensuring conformity to PennDOT standards, safety protocols, and regulatory guidelines. Collaboration with construction, environmental, and traffic engineering teams is vital to integrate design components. Providing technical expertise during roadway plan preparation and using advanced design software to produce precise plans is expected. Active participation in project meetings and assistance with design-related challenges throughout the project lifecycle are required.
The surveying position is designed to equip individuals for a career in the surveying unit. Trainees will work alongside experienced professionals, gaining hands-on experience with surveying equipment on projects affecting communities in Pennsylvania. Responsibilities include assisting in field surveys for roadways, bridges, and right-of-way boundaries, operating tools such as total stations, GPS receivers, and data collectors, and supporting data collection, computation, and documentation under supervision.
Involvement in office-based survey analysis and map preparation is expected, with travel to diverse project sites as assigned.
