Overview
Transportation Engineer I and Transportation Engineer II roles perform transportation engineering work in planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. They ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer II performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas and generally works independently on assignments; however, unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Responsibilities- Acts as a consultant to supervisors of special maintenance crews.
- Coordinates traffic engineering studies and traffic counts.
- Develops work orders and other agreements with consulting engineers for building system projects, studies and analysis.
- Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
- Investigates and responds to public complaints on traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, pavement markings, traffic management systems or other traffic related items.
- Meets with law enforcement agencies and/or city officials to discuss traffic problems and possible solutions.
- Performs data collection, evaluation, analyses, studies, investigations, forecasts and/or plan development associated with facility issues.
- Monitors consultant design contracts.
- Negotiates fees, explains scope of work and monitors consultant design contracts.
- Oversees the operations and maintenance of an ITS operations center/managed area.
- Provides technical assistance for the development of rural ITS/traffic management corridors.
- Responsible for Traffic Engineering operations and Traffic Systems Management.
- Develops traffic engineering and traffic management system policies, procedures and standards.
- Interprets manuals and required guidelines for traffic operations.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Engineer I
Education
:
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science (bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS).
Experience
: 4 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Licenses and Certification
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Professional Engineer*
- Professionals licensed in another state, but not currently licensed in Texas, must meet Texas licensure requirements within six (6) months of hire and sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
Transportation Engineer II
Education
:
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science (bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS).
Experience
: 5 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Licenses and Certification
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Transportation Engineer I
- Considerable knowledge of: statistical analysis methodologies; plans, specifications and estimates preparation/processing/compliance; traffic management systems operations; traffic signal systems design, testing and maintenance; fundamentals of electrical/electronics; maintenance concepts and requirements.
- Proficient in: persuasion/negotiation; analyzing and organizing data; maintaining safe working relationships.
- Other Attributes: strong logical reasoning; capable of defining problems and making decisions that support business objectives.
