Position: Utility Tech.-Power House Operator
Location: West Point

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain proper operating conditions on boilers, power generating equipment, and associated auxiliaries including a high‑pressure feedwater boiler, major natural gas pressure‑reducing system, compressed air, potable water and steam/electrical distribution systems to meet variable load conditions.
  • Operate and regenerate water softeners, deionized softeners, neutralization, and boiler feedwater treatment system, making resin changes as necessary and ensuring efficient operation.
  • Operate and maintain steam‑driven and fossil‑fuel fired electric generating systems and associated equipment.
  • Operate utility systems/equipment within specified environmental emissions monitoring limits; respond to alarms/emissions exceptions by making proper system/equipment adjustments and notifying appropriate authorities.
  • Check yard piping systems including natural gas, fuel oil, steam, and condensate for proper operation; monitor and maintain associated manholes, valves, connections, valve boxes, traps, condensate receiving stations, etc.; perform appropriate maintenance to assure service reliability.
  • Operate, as necessary, compressed air, chilled water, and condenser water systems including associated auxiliaries in the utility system area.
  • Operate and maintain proper operating conditions on all waste‑heat boilers, portable boilers and associated auxiliaries.
  • Monitor and operate the waste treatment systems, including pumps, blowers, tank levels, and hazardous material as necessary.
  • Maintain proper equipment conditions by performing routine maintenance, including oiling, changing oil as required, greasing, packing, cleaning, adjusting, changing and/or cleaning burners and strainers/filters, housekeeping, etc.; troubleshoot and make general repairs, adjustments and corrections as necessary for continuity of efficient service.
  • Check applicable equipment and operating instruments and take necessary steps to maintain proper operating conditions; maintain records of operating details including fuel, water, steam, chemical, electrical data, etc.; produce daily shift reports, change recording charts as required, and enter data into shift logbooks or automated systems.
  • Maintain boiler water chemistry; perform chemical tests/analysis of boiler feedwater, condensate return, and other plant systems; troubleshoot and take actions to correct problem areas; add chemicals as required and maintain records.
  • Prepare equipment and/or systems for modification, tie‑in, or overhaul by shutting down as required; return systems to service.
  • Maintain proper system and equipment operation in all utility areas to ensure energy and water usage efficiency; inspect and maintain boilers and power‑generating equipment, and participate in scheduled maintenance and overhaul.
  • Evaluate power (steam and electrical) requirements and operate system efficiently considering plant demands, steam‑driven equipment, and accessories.
  • Print computer‑generated equipment efficiency and combustion test data on all boilers for proper plant set‑up.
  • Perform soundings of fuel oil storage tanks, caustic and acid tanks; oversee bulk deliveries; perform inspections of associated containment areas; maintain required records of levels; respond to spills and notify proper authorities; pull required oil samples from tanks, vessels and equipment for analysis.
  • Operate various communications equipment, monitor assigned systems and respond to emergency alarms from utility monitoring systems and outside utility companies.
  • Operate the boiler and power generation control system and associated equipment remotely, locally, automatically or by hand as required under normal and emergency conditions; monitor, troubleshoot and act on input from boilers and power system graphics, panels, and annunciator systems; make required adjustments on controls to maintain proper water levels, steam pressure, combustion air/fuel, power generation and distribution requirements.
