FPGA Engineer Position

We're looking for an FPGA Engineer specialized in image and video processing who is highly motivated to work with a talented and diverse engineering team to address the development of a high-performance multi-camera platform for airborne systems. The platform integrates multiple video streams and requires advanced real-time video processing to deliver a unified output to the pilot for better visual perception in a degraded environment.

As part of the optronics engineering team, you will be responsible for implementing key FPGA image and video processing functions such as:

  • Video acquisition and preprocessing from multiple camera sources.
  • Video distribution with left/right channel segregation.
  • Integration with avionics and video interfaces such as 3G-SDI, ARINC 429, Ethernet and MIL-STD-1553 for synchronized data exchange.
  • Automatic histogram control for dynamic contrast optimization.
  • Global contrast harmonization to ensure seamless blending of multiple video sources.
  • Image stitching for enabling a wide field-of-view visualization.
  • Real-time image extraction.

The ideal candidate for this role is someone who is able to work proactively and closely with other cross-functional engineering groups such as industrial design, product design, production test, FPGA and hardware engineering.

What you'll be doing:

  • Work with a friendly and positive team to design new high-performance multi-camera platform for airborne systems.
  • You will work on international projects with the latest and greatest in video processing technologies!
  • You will have responsibility for understanding requirements, developing innovative projects, planning new features, and ensuring that all developments are delivered according to specification.
  • Collaborate with Hardware, FPGA, and Mechanical Engineers to ensure the platform works for its intended purpose.
  • You will use your critical thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure the highest quality for the results considering scheduling, budget, and effort constraints.
  • You will have effective, constant communication with other project partners and project managers all the way from the kick-offs to the stakeholder meetings.
  • You will participate in internal meetings to build a comprehensive work plan, manage the budget and personnel effort for projects.
  • You will write deliverables, dissemination material, assist in project-related communication activities, and attend workshops and other events.
  • You will be developing key FPGA image and video processing functions. Validation of the design will be an important part of the position, and you will be expected to produce test benches, simulations, and experimental evaluation strategies to verify the prototypes.

What You Bring to Safran:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Telecommunications, Electronic or Computer Engineering.
  • Passion, energy, and high motivation to participate in industrial R&D projects and initiatives.
  • Teamwork, organization skills, autonomous work, and project management.
  • Good written and communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of Xilinx FPGA tools and platforms (Vivado, Vitis, HLS, …).
  • General understanding of FPGA logic design and verification.
  • FPGA logic design (VHDL/Verilog, System Verilog, test bench implementation, debugging, timing closure,...).
  • Proven expertise in implementing and debugging FPGA IP cores for video-processing algorithms (filtering, segmentation, edge detection, object detection, tracking, etc...).
  • Extensive experience in repositories and version control systems (Git, SVN, …).
  • Minimal experience required: 3 years.

Desirable skills. The company will positively consider knowledge and experience working with:

  • Knowledge of avionics and video interfaces such as 3G-SDI, ARINC 429, Ethernet and MIL-STD-1553.
  • Proven expertise in Design Assurance Level (DAL) compliance, particularly DAL C, for airborne platforms.
  • Knowledge of advanced FPGA applications in image/video processing:
    • Basic Image Processing:
Filtering, Thresholding & Binarization, Morphological operations, Color space conversion, Histogram equalization & contrast adjustment.
    • Feature Extraction & Analysis:
Edge and corner detection, Keypoint detection,…
