Transportation Engineer I
Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, and maintenance. Ensures compliance with federal and state laws, policies, and standards, and works with governmental officials and private entities. Operates independently within established procedures.
- Assists Project Managers with resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement.
- Coordinates and monitors assigned projects, programs, and plans.
- Coordinates traffic engineering studies and traffic counts.
- Designs traffic management computer/communication/video systems, traffic signals, radios, and railroad crossing equipment.
- Develops traffic engineering and traffic management system policies, procedures, and standards.
- Investigates and responds to public complaints about traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, pavement markings, and traffic management systems.
- Reviews and processes Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submissions.
- Reviews traffic engineering studies and warrants for traffic signals and speed zones.
- Collaborates to develop, monitor, and update integrated project plans and schedules.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Performs complex transportation engineering work and operates independently. Handles higher-level responsibilities, including advanced design and more complex studies.
- Oversees and/or performs traffic engineering studies to recommend solutions for high‑accident locations, warrant traffic signals, speed zones, and determine capacity and channelization of highways.
- Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts.
- Includes all essential duties listed for a Transportation Engineer I, plus the items above.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work and provides leadership on projects.
- Assesses and reports actual project progress versus planned progress to determine trends and variances for complex projects.
- Assists Project Managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines.
- Develops plans for resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement.
- Performs advanced engineering design work for traffic signals, CTMS, pavement marking, and other transportation operations projects.
- Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, and assessments.
- Reviews and revises schematics, PS&E, project designs, shop drawings, and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution, roadway lighting, and traffic management systems.
- Includes all essential duties listed for a Transportation Engineer I and II, plus the items above.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related science accepted by TX PELS.
- Experience: 4–6 years of engineering or transportation engineering experience (full time or prorated part time). Graduate‑level education may substitute experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
- Licenses and
Certifications:- Valid driver’s license; driving a state vehicle required.
- Licensed Professional Engineer or a plan to obtain a Texas PE license within six months of hire.
- Related graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
- Experience performing traffic engineering studies and analysis tools (e.g., Synchro, Highway Capacity Software).
- In‑depth knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and traffic engineering principles.
- Knowledge of Intelligent Transportation Systems and roadway illumination design.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis, plans and specifications preparation, traffic management systems operations, and design procedures.
