Key Responsibilities

The Intermediate Naval Architect is responsible for professionally and efficiently executing Naval Architecture work including stability assessments, structural assessments, Engineering Change (EC) and design work in support of client taskings for small to large platforms.

General
  • Provide Naval Architecture advice and support to external and internal customers.
  • Independently undertake technical work which requires coordination with colleagues and making a substantial contribution to assigned projects.
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.
  • Undertake engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice.
  • Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures.
  • Maintain your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization.
  • Demonstrate willingness and active adoption of coaching and mentoring provided by senior staff, and support with mentorship to junior staff in developing technical competency.
  • Contribute to building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities.
Role Specific
  • Demonstrate and facilitate the use of Naval Architectural calculations on small simple platforms (tug, barge, ferry) to large complex ships (surface combatants, submarines, cargo and passenger vessels) across one or more areas including:
    • Hydrostatics;
    • Hydrodynamics;
    • Structural strength;
    • Seakeeping and motions;
    • Resistance and Propulsion.
  • Experienced contribution to feasibility studies, concept designs, installation design and integration of new and replacement equipment, including communicating design outputs using 2D drawings or 3D models.
  • Support conducting of Trim and Incline (T&I) experiments and provide input into associated calculations and documentation.
  • Contribute to working with Shipyards, Dockyards, Owners, Class and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to conduct ship surveys for design and engineering changes, mid‑life upgrades and vessel condition documentation including:
    • Lead development of survey packages from technical documentation.
    • Conduct visual inspections and condition surveys on marine structures (including submarines) in a heavy industrial environment.
    • Produce survey reports which compile inspection findings including stability reports in client, Class or Standard designated formats.
    • Working knowledge of domain specific standards including International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders.
    • Stamp and Seal Professional Engineering deliverables in area of practice.
    • Maintain a program of Continuing Professional Development to sustain your technical knowledge.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • Degree in Naval Architecture.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in Naval Architecture.
  • Existing registration or ability to obtain registration with Professional Engineering governance body in Province of work.
  • Eligible for a Canadian security clearance.
  • Strong understanding of ship stability, structural design, and hydrodynamics.
  • Proficiency with Naval Architecture software tool sets.
  • Experience in the in-service support of naval systems and/or engineering design.
  • Experience in the development and use of technical studies and drawings.
  • Understanding of specifications for government and commercial vessels.
  • Experience in systems integration, ship construction and/or repair.
