Status:
Full Time (40 hours/week)
Shift: Variable schedule; every other weekend and typically 2 holidays per year
Position OverviewPlay a vital role in patient care by performing accurate phlebotomy and specimen collection. This position directly supports diagnostic testing that guides treatment decisions. The role also includes supportive laboratory duties, offering opportunities to build skills in a dynamic and rewarding environment.
Key Responsibilities- Interact courteously and professionally with all laboratory customers; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner
- Accurately identify patients and collect blood specimens via venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick
- Instruct patients on proper specimen collection procedures and collect non-blood samples as required
- Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and sound judgment while recognizing priorities and departmental needs
- Collect and transport specimens from on-site and off-site locations following established safety protocols
- Adhere to all laboratory and hospital policies related to procedures, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and infection prevention practices
- Perform clerical and computer-related tasks, including entering demographic information, test orders, and processing test charges and credits
- Ensure accuracy and adequacy of patient and specimen identification
- Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as assigned
- Communicate unusual or problematic incidents to technical staff, supervisors, and/or pathologists
- Perform arterial punctures in accordance with strict collection and post-collection guidelines, as required
- Monitor and maintain supplies; utilize materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Strong computer skills preferred
- Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program preferred
- Minimum of 6 months of phlebotomy experience preferred
- Phlebotomy Technician (PBT (ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred
