Job Details

With a commitment to patient- and family-centered care, the Surgical Technician functions as a member of the intraoperative healthcare team. The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) (TS-C) is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the sterile field and for anticipating the surgeon’s needs intraoperatively by applying comprehensive knowledge of operative procedures, equipment, anatomy and surgical preferences. The CST works closely with all perioperative team members during the preoperative, intraoperative, and post‑operative care of the surgical patient and supports decontamination and sterile supply areas.

The technician provides courteous and professional interactions with patients and staff and may also serve as a preceptor for new crew members.

Responsibilities
  • Interact with co‑workers, visitors, and other staff consistently with Jefferson values.
  • Recognize patients and their families or designated care partners and provide safe, compassionate, and coordinated care based on respect for individual preferences and cultural beliefs.
  • Communicate with and support the interprofessional team, patients, families, and designated care partners.
  • Inspect the operating room (OR) for cleanliness and secure, set up, and prepare OR equipment, instruments and supplies required for surgical procedures.
  • Participate in the team time‑out and advocate for patient safety and high‑quality care in the perioperative setting.
  • Assist with gowning and gloving of the surgical team, including the surgeon.
  • Prepare the sterile field, drape the patient, and maintain sterile field integrity.
  • Provide a thorough report to relief personnel on the status of the procedure, instruments, materials, and any other pertinent information to ensure a smooth transition during the surgical procedure.
  • Count all sharps, sponges and instruments with the circulating nurse before, during, and after the procedure; follow count policies and initiate corrective action if a count is incorrect.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Assist in maintaining supplies and equipment to ensure efficient unit operations.
  • Help maintain a safe, neat, and clean environment to facilitate safe and effective patient care in the OR.
  • Act as primary preceptor to other surgical team members as needed.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Graduate of a surgical technician training program.
  • Experience:

    Prior surgical technician experience preferred.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities:

    Demonstrated ability to convey respect and collaborate with each patient, family, and/or designated care partner; knowledge of diverse backgrounds and effective communication techniques; attention to detail and accuracy; understanding of industry standards, policies, procedures, and best practices; knowledge of the operating room environment, risks, and equipment; ability to perform surgical assistance techniques in compliance with health and safety standards; application of policies and procedures to maximize OR efficiency and productivity.
  • Licenses and certifications:
    Required BLS – Basic Life Support – American Heart Association;
    Surgical Technician must maintain required certification.
