Ophthalmic Technician

UPMC Vision Institute is hiring an Ophthalmic Technician to support our Tarentum office located at 303

E. 10th Ave., Tarentum, PA 15084. This position works Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional 7:15 a.m. start times as technicians rotate schedules. The Ophthalmic Technician plays a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care by performing patient workups, documenting medical histories, obtaining diagnostic testing, preparing patients for examination and treatment, and assisting providers with clinical procedures.

Candidates should thrive in a fast-paced ophthalmology setting, demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills, and be committed to providing exceptional patient service. Travel to UPMC Vision Institute locations including St. Margaret, Monroeville, Wexford, Mercy, Oakland, and Shadyside may be required approximately once per month, with more frequent travel to North Hills based on clinic and staffing needs. Responsibilities:
  • History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.
  • Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuity
  • Lensometry: automated and manual
  • Pupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.
  • Visual fields:
    Amsler grid & confrontation fields
  • Ocular Motility:
    Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmus
  • Refractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
  • Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.
  • Supplemental skills:
    Color testing, glare test
  • Angle assessment & dilation of pupils
  • Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.
  • Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.
  • Travel to other clinical sites.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred.
  • Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
  • Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
  • Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    Valid CPR certification
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
  • Act 34 with renewal
