Fire Service Paramedic; General

The Philadelphia Fire Department is hiring candidates with current paramedic certification in any state to join their dedicated team. This is an advanced life support and field paramedical position responding to emergency calls to provide medical assistance with emphasis on patient stabilization and safe transport to medical facilities.

• Provide advanced life support and field paramedical care in response to emergency calls.
• Stabilize patients and facilitate safe transport to a full-service medical facility.
• Communicate with the general public, comfort patients, reassure families, and coordinate with fire and police authorities.
• Perform duties according to standard paramedical practices and established drug therapy protocol.
• Work rotating shifts under the general supervision of an administrative or technical fire officer.
• Operate effectively in adverse weather conditions and perform moderate physical effort.

• Current paramedic certification in any state.
• High school diploma or GED (completion of the twelfth school grade).
• Possession of a Pennsylvania State certification as a Paramedic prior to appointment and during tenure of employment.
• Possession of a valid class motor vehicle operator’s license admitted to the Pennsylvanian traffic register.
• Ability to physically perform duties and work in the environmental conditions required for the position.

Effective March 1 , 2024, until the Philadelphia Fire Department reaches 80% of its staffing complement for Fire Service Paramedic, the residency requirement for uniformed members of IAFF Local 22 is eliminated. Once 80% is reached, the requirement reverts to a requirement to reside in Pennsylvania.

• Veteran’s Preference:
  Ten (10) points for veterans who are honorably discharged, submitted DD214‑Member 4.
• Legacy Preference:
  Ten (10) points for children or grandchildren of Philadelphia Firefighters or Police Officers killed or died in line of duty, with proof of relationship and death certificate.
• National Volunteer Service Preference:
  Up to five (5) points based on volunteer service with Peace Corps, Ameri Corps, or Ameri Corps State and National programs, with points awarded for specific durations (2‑year, 1‑year, 450, 675, 900, 1700 hours).
• CTE Preference:
  For exams announced after May 1 , 2023, up to five (5) points for graduates of Philadelphia School District CTE programs within three years preceding announcement, subject to grading and documentation.

• Type of Exam:
  Modified Training and Experience Evaluation. Approved applicants will receive a score of 70 plus any applicable preference points.
• An Eligible List will be established the week of August 31 , 2026.
• Applicants will not be required to appear for a scheduled exam.
