Job Overview:
The Medical Records Specialist maintains medical records in accordance with federal and state guidelines, as well as in accordance with facility established policies and procedures, to assure that a complete medical records program is maintained.
Job Responsibilities:
Assists in organizing, planning, and directing the medical records section in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Maintain minutes of meetings as necessary.
Participate in Quality Assurance Programs, and any other facility committee, or program which seeks to improve the performance and accuracy of resident care.
Collect and assemble/compile records for committee review, as requested, and prepare reports for staff/other committees as directed.
Assembles, classifies, and indexes medical data in accordance with accepted procedures and facility policy.
File active and inactive records in accordance with established policies.
Ensure incomplete records/charts are returned to Nursing or appropriate department head for correction.
Abstract information from the records as authorized/required for insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, VA, etc.
Keeps all resident and employee information confidential.
Qualifications
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office technology.
Knowledge of office procedures, medical terminology, typing, filing, transcription, and computers is required.
Excellent communication (verbal, written and listening) skills.
Ability to work independently or part of a group.
Experience working in a skilled nursing facility is preferred.
Education:
High School diploma or GED is required
RHIT certification strongly preferred
