The Williamsport Area School District is accepting applications for a
Full-Time Sign Language Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This position is for the  school year. The location is
Hepburn-Lycoming Primary School;subject to the determination of the Superintendent. This is a7 hour/185 day position during school hours and is subject to the requirements as listed on the job description below.

Must Provide evidence of a score of 3.5 or better on the EIPA, or provide evidence as a qualified Sign Language Interpreter or Transl iterator under the Sign Language Interpreter and Transl iterator Registration Act (63 P.S. 1725.1-1725.12). Qualifications for this position shall be based upon applicable verified work experience and verified educational/training/credentials. For internal candidates, qualifications for this position are defined solely by the District, including an employee’s work attendance, disciplinary history, credentials and other job specific qualifications.

Wages are as defined by the current bargaining unit agreement.

Basic Functions:

This position is primarily responsible for providing sign language interpreting for "signing" hard of hearing or deaf students. Using American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign Language, and Voice Interpreting, this position facilitates communication between deaf/hard of hearing students and their teachers, their hearing peers, and other personnel within the school by relaying information to and from the deaf/hard of hearing student. This position also confers and consults with regular and special education staff regarding deaf/hard of hearing students’ needs and progress;

reviews and studies curriculum material, participates in staff development, serves as the interpreter for both deaf/hard of hearing students and their parents at meetings and special events.

Education & Experience:

Subject to the provisions of Act 57 of 2004. This position requires a score of at least 3.5 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at the appropriate academic level, using the appropriate communication method, or evidence as a qualified sign language interpreter or Transl iterator under the Sing Language Interpreter and Transl iterator Registration Act, and its implementing regulations. This position requires a high school diploma and previous experience as an Interpreter for the deaf and hearing impaired.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

This position requires demonstrated patience and the ability to relate to students, parents, and teachers in a manner that develops student confidence in benefiting from the educational process. This position requires basic content knowledge in English, reading, spelling and mathematics. Requires a demonstrated desire to assist and work with students who are deaf and hearing impaired as well as their hearing peers, teachers, parents and staff members.

This position requires the ability to understand and adjust to changes in the educational environment.
