Shop Manager

Surface Preparation Technologies (SPT) is a leader in highway safety with locations in Pennsylvania and Texas. As the nation's largest rumble strip contractor, SPT plays a critical role in preventing drift-off-road and head-on collisions across the United States.

At SPT, you'll have the opportunity to lead the maintenance of specialized trucks and equipment used to install roadway safety solutions that save lives every day. We are seeking an experienced Shop Manager to oversee shop operations, fleet maintenance, and personnel management while ensuring safety, efficiency, and operational excellence.

Position Summary

The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing daily shop operations, managing fleet maintenance and repairs, supervising shop personnel, and ensuring compliance with company policies and safety standards. This role plays a vital part in minimizing equipment downtime and supporting the overall success of field operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Shop Operations & Fleet Management
  • Oversee daily shop operations, including vehicle inspections, fleet maintenance scheduling, repairs, and inventory management.
  • Direct and prioritize preventive maintenance, equipment repairs, and heavy-duty truck service to ensure timely and cost-effective completion.
  • Coordinate work orders, specialized service appointments, and repair deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively with Operations and Dispatch teams to prioritize equipment needs and minimize downtime.
  • Schedule and manage fleet maintenance to ensure equipment availability and operational readiness.
  • Review and approve repair orders, invoices, and related maintenance documentation.
  • Assist with the procurement of equipment, parts, tools, and shop supplies.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and processing of work orders and parts inventory.
  • Provide troubleshooting assistance and field support as needed.
  • Learn and maintain specialized proprietary equipment designed and built in-house.
  • Adapt to changing operational priorities and equipment demands.
Leadership & Employee Development
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop shop employees and maintenance technicians.
  • Train team members on company procedures, equipment maintenance, and repair best practices.
  • Oversee hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, and employee development.
  • Address employee relations matters, conduct performance evaluations, and administer disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Provide recommendations regarding staffing, compensation, and workforce planning.
  • Verify employee time records and submit payroll information for approval.
Safety & Continuous Improvement
  • Maintain a safe work environment and enforce all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards and all applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Attend operations and management meetings as required.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance shop productivity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working on heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
  • Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • State Inspection License (Class 1, 3, or
    7).
  • Ability to own and maintain basic tools required for servicing heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds regularly.
  • Strong understanding of hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, and valves.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, electrical, engine, and equipment systems.
Preferred
  • 1-2 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Previous fleet maintenance management experience.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
