The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator performs a wide range of operational, maintenance, monitoring, and compliance activities necessary to safely operate BMMA’s 2 wastewater treatment plants, 9 satellite pump stations, and collection system. This is a semi-skilled position requiring cross‑training in all areas of plant operations and emergency response.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operate, monitor, and adjust wastewater treatment, pumping, and sludge processing equipment.
- Monitor control panels, SCADA systems, gauges, meters, and laboratory results to regulate treatment performance.
- Collect wastewater samples and perform laboratory testing to maintain compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Maintain accurate operational logs, reports, spreadsheets, and records.
- Perform routine inspections and assist with scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs.
- Participate in rotating on‑call emergency response and weekend operational checks.
- Respond to customer concerns and report non‑routine operational issues to supervision. li>Assist with safety meetings, operational rounds, and regulatory inspections.
- Operate light and heavy equipment including trucks, tractor, camera truck, jetter, and flusher.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Pennsylvania Wastewater Operator Certification (minimum Class B, E‑1,2,4) or ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment.
- Minimum three (3) years of wastewater operations experience or related trade experience (industrial electrician, plumber, mechanic, pipefitter).
- Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to read maps, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders and stairs, bend, squat, and work in confined spaces.
Ability to lift up to 10 lbs continuously, 25 lbs frequently, and up to 100 lbs occasionally.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and follow all safety protocols.
On‑call Operator must be able to respond to after‑hour emergencies on a weekly rotating basis.
Additional Requirements- Ability to operate and use SCADA and GIS systems.
- Ability to respond to PA One‑Call notifications.
- Must demonstrate professional communication with coworkers and the public.
- Must comply with all safety training requirements including confined space and traffic control.
