JOB SUMMARY
Sets up and operates a variety of standard and CNC metalworking machines, grinders, and hand tools to manufacture precision molds, dies, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, and related components.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Comply with all federal and state environmental, health, and safety regulations, as well as company safety policies and procedures.
- Read G-code and operate CNC equipment.
- Fabricate tooling using appropriate machines and machining techniques, including:
- Tunnel gates for injection molds (manual milling)
- Injection molds
- Mold sleeves and cores
- Core and pin assemblies
- Elastomer tooling, gauges, fixtures, pins, inserts, and related components
- Review blueprints and perform all necessary mathematical calculations to complete or correct tooling.
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on all types of tools, including:
- Adjusting form, fit, and function of tooling assemblies
- Polishing and refinishing surfaces to remove defects (nicks, galling, gouges, chatter, tool marks, etc.)
- Cleaning and repairing threaded holes
- Inspecting tooling for wear/damage and recommending repairs
- Grinding platen contact surfaces to restore flatness
- Troubleshooting binding mold interlocks
- Work independently to produce high quality tooling within estimated manufacturing costs.
- Record required information in the GT data collection system
- Wear required PPE, including safety glasses and safety shoes.
- Operate wire EDM equipment to create cutting tools for production molds.
- Properly use all machine shop inspection equipment.
- Make revisions, perform preventive maintenance, and complete repairs on molds and tooling as needed.
- Provide direction to lower level Tool Maintenance Machinists involved in tooling fabrication.
- Perform 5S functions, including:
- Maintaining equipment fluid levels
- Ensuring tools are cleaned and stored properly
- Participating in team activities
- Cleaning equipment
- Maintaining general housekeeping standards
- Collaborate with Tool Designers by providing feedback to improve tooling manufacturability.
- Notify supervisor of any issues encountered during the manufacture of molds, dies, fixtures, cutting tools, or gauges.
- Perform additional duties in the Tool Shop as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or equivalent training/experience as a Toolmaker or Machinist.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in tool maintenance, toolmaking, precision machining, or a closely related trade.
- Proficiency in operating computers, including the ability to search for files, save documents, and perform basic edits.
