As a Development Technician, Building Materials
, you will be responsible for producing liquid paint samples by following formulation recipes and supporting application, testing, and evaluation processes. This role involves sample preparation, coating application, physical testing, and assisting with formulation and application studies under the direction of senior chemists. Additional responsibilities include maintaining lab standards, documenting work, and adhering to EHS practices.

Responsibilities- Produce liquid paint samples by following formulation recipes (typical sizes: ½ pint to 1 quart; occasional 5-gallon pails for trials)
- Apply and prepare coated wood, vinyl, or fiberglass samples following defined application processes
- Perform physical property testing (adhesion, abrasion resistance, stain/chemical resistance, scratch resistance, gloss retention, etc.)
- Conduct color matching on wood substrates using stains and/or opaque systems
- Plan and execute application and formulation DOE’s as directed by senior chemists
- Maintain 5S standards, including cleaning spray booths, work areas, and equipment
- Follow EHS best practices and maintain required training
- Enter daily time in the Kronos system
- Document work in LIMS lab notebook upon project completion
- Dispose of waste in proper waste streams
- Support occasional travel for customer line trials and product validation
- High School Diploma required; scientific background preferred
- Two years of college-level math and science or equivalent experience strongly preferred
- Proficiency with MS Excel and MS Word desired
- Minimum 2 years of lab experience required; 3–5 years preferred
- Ability to quickly learn and adapt to changing customer specifications
- Experience with liquid paint application
- Familiarity with coating testing or measurement devices
- Experience using power tools (chop saws, roll coaters, drill press, etc.)
- Strong problem-solving skills and logical thinking
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate laboratory equipment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to follow customer and internal testing specifications and methods
