The Quality Lab Supervisor is a role of trust, integrity and professionalism who drives continuous improvement in all areas of safety as well as tensile testing (TYE). This position focuses on following compliance and corporate guidelines while improving how we deploy testing to ensure repeatability. The supervisor safely leads Lab Analysts, ensures JSA compliance, instructs and trains team members, and maintains mechanical equipment in a machine shop environment.
Documentation, procedures, and training are vital to success. The role follows ASTM and Aluminum Association guidelines, interprets customer drawings, identifies testing areas, and manages computer entries.
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 3-5 years of quality experience in a manufacturing facility.
- Fluency in English is mandatory.
- Must have good customer relation skills and the ability to communicate on all levels.
- Associate’s degree preferred.
- Manufacturing experience: exposure to aluminum extrusion industry is a plus.
- Competence with Microsoft Office tools desired.
- Good mechanical aptitude to safely and efficiently operate equipment including testing equipment, band saw, milling machines, lathe, drill presses, hand tools, etc.
- Good mathematical written skills to accurately analyze and report all types of test results.
- Must be highly motivated and able to work responsibly without direct supervision in a team environment.
- Good communication skills to interact with other analysts.
- Provide safe leadership to the Lab Analyst crew in all facets of lab activity.
- Safety awareness, ability to follow JSA’s.
- ISO/IATF knowledge.
- Complete ENA TYE level 1 training with test; optionally Level 2 training with test.
- Computer knowledge – data review & entry, understanding functions of ORACLE, QTS, CIMEX, SCS, LAPS.
- Instruct, train, and correct team members on safe work practices and established procedures.
- Process test failures per operating procedures and ASTM guidelines.
- Process manual fit‑back in accordance with corporate guidelines.
- Approve or reject test graphs and quarantine tests per corporate guidelines.
- Follow all compliance & corporate guidelines, flagging compliance issues.
- Attention to detail is critical.
- Communicate with all levels of management, including corporate level.
- Determine and report chemical analysis via optical emission spectroscopy, including sample preparation.
- Determine and report mechanical properties of finished goods per customer specifications, including sample preparation.
- Understand and use tensile test machines; read testing graphs.
- Perform daily calibration checks on equipment and make necessary adjustments.
- Perform daily verification tests (DVT) on ZWICK testing robots.
- Perform tasks safely, adhering to company, department, and EHS policies.
- Perform additional metallurgical inspections such as conductivity testing, bend testing, grain size analysis.
- Operate hardness equipment (desktop and handheld) such as Barcol’s and Webster’s; understand hardness scales Brinell, RE, RH.
- Prioritize workflow through the lab – red boards, rush orders, FIFO logic.
- Communicate between shifts.
- Operate testing equipment safely and efficiently.
- Accurately analyze and report test results using math skills.
- Be highly motivated and work responsibly without direct supervision.
- Interact with lab analysts.
- Apply basic problem‑solving skills and explain technical information.
- Maintain safety awareness and record.
- Assist other departments as needed.
- Actively participate in problem solving to improve the lab.
- Lead shift TPMs and maintain TPM systems in the lab.
- Perform other duties assigned by the department manager.
