Metal Shop Lead - 2nd Shift

The Metal Shop Lead supports the Metal Shop Supervisor by coordinating the fabrication functions within the metal shop to support the assembly of custom switch gear structures. This dual-impact role combines operational leadership with hands-on technical execution to ensure all products meet precise client specifications and are prepared for shipment. The Lead is responsible for maintaining a safe work environment, demonstrating mastery of machinery safety, and training or mentoring metal shop technicians.

Success in this role requires the ability to interpret complex blueprints and a willingness to provide occasional on-site support for installation or service projects. As a non-exempt role, standard hours are 40 per week; however, flexibility is required to meet critical deadlines. This may involve overtime, including evenings and weekends, as necessitated by production schedules.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Team Lead Responsibilities

• Operational Oversight: Partner with the Metal Shop Supervisor to oversee daily operations, ensuring all productivity, efficiency, and quality standards are met or exceeded.
• Project Management: Monitor and report project progress using established software and internal tracking processes to ensure deadlines are consistently met.
• Process Improvement: Proactively identify, propose, and implement enhancements to metal shop workflows to increase throughput and reduce waste.
• Management Support: Serve as the primary point of contact and provide coverage for the Metal Shop Supervisor during absences; assist with facility opening and closing procedures to ensure site security.
• Mentorship & Coaching: Lead by example to foster a culture of excellence; provide hands-on training and technical coaching to technicians to enhance their skillsets.
• Performance Insight: Monitor team output and provide substantive input to the Metal Shop Manager regarding performance evaluations and professional development needs.
• Talent Acquisition: Participate in the interview process for departmental vacancies and lead the onboarding and technical training of new hires.
• Resource Coordination: Coordinate overtime scheduling and labor allocation as needed to hit critical operational targets.
• Safety Advocacy: Conduct regular safety briefings and ensure rigorous adherence to all company safety policies and OSHA standards.
• Equipment Maintenance: Oversee and perform routine maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and ensure all machinery is operating at peak performance.
• Logistics Oversight: Coordinate the final preparation and staging of materials to ensure accurate and timely shipments.
• Professional Growth: Actively participate in advanced operational, safety, and leadership training as mandated by management to maintain a high level of expertise.
