AboutThe Role
Are you a forest policy wonk with a knack for turning complex ideas into easy-to-understand messaging? If so, this might be the job for you!
The Forest Campaigner will advance Sierra Club BC’s forest campaign goals by combining policy expertise with exceptional communication skills and public engagement strategies. They will help identify the policy changes needed to safeguard endangered ecosystems in B.C., with a focus on protecting old growth and other primary forests in a manner that fully respects the rights of Indigenous Peoples. They will craft strategies and actions to mobilize public support and influence decision-makers, with the goal of shifting to a more sustainable forest economy that supports biodiversity and local communities.
They are skilled at translating complex forest issues into clear, compelling messages, building coalitions, and leveraging digital tools and social media to educate, inspire, and drive meaningful action across communities. The Forest Campaigner reports to the Campaigns Director and works closely with the campaigns, organizing and communications teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in science, policy, environmental studies, or equivalent.
- Minimum five years of experience in forest policy, advocacy, or environmental organizing in B.C.
- Comfortable doing media interviews both on and off camera.
- Ability to engage, maintain and build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including experience in government relations and working with First Nations partners.
- Experience working in intercultural contexts and applying principles of reconciliation, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Direct experience working with Indigenous knowledges and communities is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of forest science and policy in B.C. and nationally.
- Exceptional ability to simplify complex environmental issues for diverse audiences.
- Ability to provide compelling media interviews on forest issues.
- Proficiency with digital tools and platforms, including social media content creation and strategies to raise awareness and drive engagement.
- Ability to motivate the public through clear calls to action and compelling narratives.
- Collaborative team player with sound judgment and ability to work independently.
- Monitor and analyze B.C.’s forest-related policies, legislation, and progress toward goals.
- Develop and advocate for policy solutions that protect old growth and primary forests, and support communities economically.
- With support from the Campaigns and Communications teams, produce policy briefs, reports, and public-facing materials, including blogs, videos, and infographics.
- Translate technical policy and science into accessible, engaging content for the public.
- Contribute to social media campaigns and digital content to educate and mobilize communities.
- Represent Sierra Club BC in media interviews, webinars, and public events as a trusted spokesperson.
- Collaborate with colleagues and partners to advance SCBC’s goals for thriving forests and sustainable economies.
