This is a contracted position that works up to 29 hours a week and no benefits are offered.

The Classroom Nurse will provide health and classroom support services to students in classrooms, assess, document, and manage the health care needs of students, assist classroom staff in supporting students during the school day in CLIU programs, and recognize symptoms and consequences of safety and environmental factors.

The Classroom Nurse is directly responsible to the Assistant Director of Special Programs and Services under the clinical guidance of the Certified School Nurse.

• Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Valid First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification
  • Valid Pennsylvania Registered Nurse License

• Provide direct health care services, including assessing, documenting, and managing the health care needs of children in the classroom
• Collaborate with the Certified School Nurse regarding medical concerns of specific students as directed
• Administer prescriptions or other medications per doctor’s order and CLIU protocols
• Participate and collaborate in IEP meetings for students requiring health care services during the school day
• Assist in reviewing medical information, including immunization records, for students referred to CLIU programs
• Collaborate with CLIU Supervisors and the Certified School Nurse to plan and provide staff development on medical issues for personnel
• Travel to designated job sites according to the established work schedule
• Provide support, feedback, and training to CLIU staff regarding personal care services outlined in the student IEP
• Interpret student health information from medical facilities, agencies, and parents with the Certified School Nurse
• Maintain accurate and current health, medication, and health plans records
• Handle health records confidentially, observing FERPA and HIPAA regulations
• Participate in meetings, trainings, and professional development as required
• Create a safe, nurturing, respectful, and welcoming environment for students, families, and staff
• Refer parents to appropriate medical treatment on an individual basis
• Conduct and/or coordinate all student screenings and testing as directed
• Adhere to Pennsylvania School Code and employer policies
• Stay current with best practices in nursing and related fields
• Assist students individually and in small groups on academic, social, communication, and behavioral tasks
• Perform appropriate lifting, positioning, and transferring techniques for student needs
• Assist students with personal hygiene, toileting, diapering, clothing changes, and feeding activities
• Encourage student independence with appropriate strategies
• Supervise and assist with self‑help skills during snack and lunch times
• Operate computers, assistive technology, and other equipment
• Monitor outdoor activities and assist with bus/van loading and unloading
• Apply behavior management strategies as directed
• Escort students to therapies, general education classes, and activities when necessary
• Assist related services staff with therapy implementation as needed
