Job Description

Under the direction of the Director of Science Services, the position is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and calibration of analytical instruments and equipment used by the College's science departments and for the instruction of students in the operation of specified analytical instruments. The position is also responsible for the receipt and inventory of chemicals and hazardous materials used by the science departments.

The position administers and oversees the remote temperature monitoring system for the critical refrigerators and freezers in the science departments. This temporary assignment will remain in place until recruitment for a full-time position is complete.

Characteristic Responsibilities
  • Oversight of the analytical instrumentation in the Science Division. These duties involve routine maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of, but not limited to, the NMR, chromatography, spectrophotometry and mass spectrometric instruments. Repairs will involve either in-house service or reaching out to vendors to have the instrument repaired. Perform annual calibration and repair of the micropipettes in the Science Division.
  • Coordinate the service contracts for certain instrumentation and be the point of contact for scheduling on-site visits and repairs. Interface with outside vendors when necessary for repair and PM work on instrumentation such as autoclaves, microscopes, centrifuges, refrigerators and freezers.
  • Work with Science Services on receipt of new instrumentation and other equipment such as refrigerators and freezers and moving equipment throughout the science building.
  • Assist the College’s Environmental Health and Safety Officer when necessary, on issues related to laboratory instrument safety and the chemical inventory.
  • Provide instruction on the use of the instrumentation to faculty, staff and students. Help with method development as necessary.
  • Manage the Chemical Inventory. This involves receiving all chemicals and bulk solvents into the science building, logging the chemicals into the on-line inventory and delivering chemicals and supplies to the appropriate laboratories. Removal of empty chemicals from the inventory.
  • Administer and oversee the remote temperature monitoring system for the critical refrigerators and freezers on campus. Respond to alarms as necessary.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned or directed.
Qualifications Educational Requirements
  • High School Diploma with technical certification/s in instrumentation, electronics, or a related field plus 3-5 years related work experience is required.
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
Experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use and troubleshooting of laboratory analytical instrumentation, in particular the NMR, GCMS, and LCMS.
  • Established knowledge of the safe and proper use, maintenance, and calibration of instrumentation.
  • Basic knowledge of chemical hazards and reactive dangers.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment is preferred.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex systems, perform precise calibrations, and work with both mechanical and electrical components of equipment.
  • Physical mobility and strength sufficient to access instruments and perform repairs, climb steps and transport chemical containers and supplies.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Vision sufficient to read computer screen and printed materials, perform instrument repairs and services.
  • Ability to work with hazardous chemicals, wear personal protective equipment including protective gloves, clothing, and air purifying respirators.
  • Ability to lift to 50 lb.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, concurrent projects and tasks and competing time demands. Excellent organizational skills are necessary.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Must have a PA Driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of satisfactory background checks.
