Position Summary
West Penn Heavy Haul is seeking an experienced Field Safety Advisor to support our heavy haul transportation and rig moving operations throughout the Appalachian Basin. This position is ideal for a safety professional who enjoys working in the field, building strong relationships with employees, and promoting a proactive safety culture.
The Field Safety Advisor will maintain a visible presence in the field by conducting safety audits, coaching employees, supporting operational leadership, and ensuring compliance with company policies, DOT regulations, and customer requirements. This individual will serve as a liaison between field operations and corporate management while working collaboratively with employees, supervisors, customers, and regulatory agencies to continuously improve safety performance.
Due to the nature of our business, this position requires flexibility to work varying schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overnight travel, based on rig moving schedules and other critical operations.
Essential Responsibilities
- Maintain a strong field presence across heavy haul transportation, rig moving, and specialized hauling operations.
- Conduct routine field safety audits, observations, inspections, and behavioral safety coaching.
- Promote and reinforce West Penn Heavy Haul's safety culture through employee engagement and leadership.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, company, and customer safety requirements.
- Evaluate driver qualifications, safe work practices, and regulatory compliance.
- Observe and coach employees on proper load securement, rigging techniques, lifting practices, equipment inspections, and safe work procedures.
- Participate in pre-job planning meetings, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and tailgate safety meetings.
- Build positive working relationships with field employees, operations management, and customer representatives.
- Serve as the communication link between field personnel and corporate leadership regarding safety concerns, operational improvements, and corrective actions.
- Conduct incident investigations, determine root causes, and assist management in implementing corrective and preventive actions.
- Assist with accident reviews, driver coaching, trend analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection reports, training records, and regulatory compliance files.
- Deliver safety training and coaching for both new and existing employees.
- Work closely with Operations, Dispatch, Fleet Maintenance, Human Resources, and customers to support safe and efficient operations.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of safety experience in heavy haul transportation, trucking, oil & gas, construction, or a related industry.
- Extensive knowledge of FMCSA/DOT regulations and commercial motor vehicle compliance.
- Strong understanding of load securement requirements, oversize/overweight transportation, rigging, crane support operations, and proper lifting techniques.
- Experience conducting field audits, safety observations, and incident investigations.
- Strong communication, leadership, and conflict resolution skills with the ability to coach employees at all levels.
- Ability to build trust and credibility while holding employees accountable to company standards.
- OSHA 30, First Aid/CPR, CHST, CSP, or other professional safety certifications are preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and electronic safety reporting systems.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to climb on trailers, heavy equipment, and loads to conduct inspections.
- Ability to walk uneven terrain, lift up to 50 pounds, and work around active construction sites and transportation operations.
- Willingness to travel and work flexible schedules based on customer needs, rig moving schedules, and critical operations.
