The Upstream Process Scientist supports process development activities within Vaccines & Advanced Biotechnologies (VAX) Process R&D. This role contributes to the development and clinical manufacturing of Drug Substance (DS) and Drug Product Intermediates (DPI) across the vaccine and advanced therapy pipeline, from preclinical through commercialization. The scientist executes upstream bioprocess studies, including fermentation and cell culture, to help deliver safe, scalable, and cost-effective manufacturing processes while collaborating across Process R&D to enable successful clinical and commercial production.
Responsibilities- Prepare laboratory reagents, solutions, and culture media to support upstream studies.
- Perform microbial and/or mammalian cell culture activities, including plating and shake flask work.
- Execute aseptic manipulations and general laboratory techniques such as pipetting and weighing.
- Conduct bench‑scale experiments and assays (e.g., pH, optical density).
- Support fermentation and cell culture process development activities.
- Analyze and document experimental data using Excel and other tools.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records in compliance with company policies.
- Learn and apply new techniques to support evolving development programs.
- Manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining organization and attention to detail.
- Collaborate effectively within team environments and follow established procedures and safety standards.
B.S. in Biology, Biochemistry, Bio/Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
Experience- Laboratory experience in fermentation and/or cell culture.
- Experience culturing microbial or mammalian cells (plating, shake flasks, or similar systems).
- Strong general laboratory skills, including aseptic technique, pipetting, and weighing.
- Experience performing basic laboratory-scale assays such as pH and optical density.
- Proficiency using Excel, including formulas and spreadsheet analysis.
- Strong scientific, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated adaptability, self‑motivation, and ability to learn new technologies and processes.
- Highly computer literate with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new programs.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, keep accurate records, and follow instructions in a regulated environment.
- Preferred experience with upstream bioprocessing equipment such as Ambr
250, stainless steel reactors, glass bioreactors, or single‑use bioreactors. - Role is part of Process R&D, supporting development and clinical manufacturing of vaccines and adjuvants across multiple modalities.
