Vaccine and Advanced Biotechnologies Process R&D (VaxPRD) – Role Summary
Job Description:
The role is part of the Vaccine and Advanced Biotechnologies Process R&D department, responsible for the development and clinical manufacturing of Drug Substance (DS) and Drug Product Intermediates (DPI) across preclinical to commercialization stages.
- Develop upstream processes for vaccine candidates, focusing on one to two vaccine programs at a time.
- Execute and analyze process development experiments for cell culture and fermentation, including shake flasks, bench‑scale and pilot‑scale bioreactors.
- Apply data analysis, statistical methods and design of experiments to design experiments, interpret datasets and support process understanding and optimization.
- Contribute to development and scale‑up of upstream processes from lab scale to pilot scale and support technology transfer to manufacturing scale.
- Perform upstream unit operations such as cell culture, fermentation, centrifugation, filtration, and in‑process assays.
- Maintain and coordinate raw material and equipment inventories; ensure safe and compliant operation and maintenance.
- Prepare clear technical reports and presentations summarizing experimental results and recommendations.
- Keep accurate, detailed laboratory records and comply with training and safety requirements.
Minimum:
Bachelor of Science in a relevant field such as Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Cell Biology, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, or Biochemistry.
- Basic scientific understanding of fermentation and cell culture bioprocesses, including cell metabolism and molecular biology for vaccine production.
- Technical understanding of bioprocess control and scaling principles.
- Willingness to work with infectious agents and pathogens.
- Occasional travel and off‑hour/weekend work.
- Hands‑on bioprocess development experience through academic lab or industry internship/co‑op; prior job role experience.
- Experience with lab‑scale (250mL–200L) bioreactors and fermentation bioprocesses such as
E. coli, yeast, CHO, HEK
293, or Vero. - Basic data literacy (statistics, data science, modeling techniques).
