GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THIS ROLE Crossing Guards help protect the safety of students, pedestrians, and motorists at designated school crossings throughout Bristol Township. This position supports the safe and orderly movement of school children before and after school by directing pedestrian crossings, monitoring traffic conditions, and promoting safe crossing practices.
Crossing Guards work outdoors in all weather conditions and serve as visible representatives of the Bristol Township Police Department and the Township.
Substitute Crossing Guards fill in for permanent crossing guards when permanent staff members are unavailable due to absence, leave, training, or other staffing needs. Substitute guards are responsible for performing the same duties and responsibilities as permanent Crossing Guards and may be assigned to different crossing locations based on operational needs. All permanent Crossing Guards begin employment as Substitute Crossing Guards before being considered for permanent assignments.
The Crossing Guard is a non-sworn position within the Bristol Township Police Department.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Monitor assigned intersections and crosswalks during student arrival and dismissal times.
Safely assist school children and pedestrians in crossing streets at designated crossings.
Observe vehicular traffic patterns and identify safe crossing opportunities.
Use approved crossing procedures and signals to stop traffic and direct pedestrians safely across roadways.
Remain alert to changing roadway, traffic, and weather conditions.
Report unsafe traffic conditions, hazards, or incidents to Police Department personnel.
Public Interaction and Customer Service Interact professionally and respectfully with students, parents, school staff, residents, and the public.
Promote safe pedestrian behavior and encourage compliance with crossing instructions.
Represent Bristol Township and the Police Department in a professional manner at all times.
Respond calmly and appropriately to questions, concerns, or minor conflicts that may arise at crossing locations.
Operations and Compliance Arrive on time and remain at assigned posts for the full scheduled shift.
Attend all required training sessions and safety meetings.
Follow all Township policies, department procedures, and applicable laws.
Wear required safety equipment and maintain a professional appearance.
Complete reports or documentation as required.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
This description is intended to provide a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of the Crossing Guard. Other duties may be assigned as needed to meet the goals of the Township.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be at least 18 years of age.
High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
Must have reliable transportation.
Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license in good standing.
Ability to pass all required pre-employment clearances for working with children.
Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History Background Check Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 151)
FBI Federal Criminal History Record (Act 114)
Ability to attend to the duties of the post for the specified shift in all types of weather conditions.
Ability to determine safe crossing times for school children and others.
Ability to remain alert to surrounding conditions and situations.
