Position Summary

The Abington School District is seeking a dedicated and vigilant School Security Officer to help maintain a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. The School Security Officer serves as a visible presence on campus, monitors school grounds and facilities, responds to safety concerns and emergencies, and collaborates with school administrators to promote a positive school climate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Monitor school grounds, buildings, entrances, parking lots, and surrounding areas to deter unauthorized activity.

Control access to school facilities and verify visitor identification and authorization.

Conduct routine patrols of school property during school hours and special events.

Respond promptly to emergencies, safety concerns, disturbances, and other incidents.

Assist with student supervision during arrival, dismissal, lunch periods, and school events.

Prepare accurate incident reports and maintain security-related documentation.

Collaborate with school administrators, staff, law enforcement, and emergency responders as needed.

Monitor security cameras, alarm systems, and other safety equipment.

Enforce school policies and procedures in a fair, consistent, and respectful manner.

Support emergency preparedness initiatives, drills, and crisis response plans.

Promote positive interactions with students and contribute to a safe and welcoming school environment.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience in security, law enforcement, military service, school safety, or a related field preferred.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during stressful situations.

Proficiency with security technology and basic computer applications.

Valid driver's license

Ability to pass a criminal background check, child abuse clearance, and any other required pre-employment screenings.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience working in a school setting.

Training in conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, or threat assessment.

CPR, First Aid, and AED certification.

Knowledge of school safety procedures and emergency response protocols.

Physical Requirements

Ability to walk, stand, and patrol for extended periods.

Ability to climb stairs and respond quickly to emergencies.

Ability to lift and carry up to 150 pounds.

Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
