Under minimum supervision, operates, maintains, and troubleshoots building Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems and equipment in order to provide a comfortable and safe environment in all University facilities including: classrooms, laboratories, offices, student residences, and refrigerators and freezers in accordance with applicable standards of the trade and regulatory agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs, as required, building HVACR equipment consistent with manufacturer's guidelines, operating design parameters, and accepted practices to optimize energy use.
  • Installs HVACR units, including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
  • Installs HVACR ductwork including flexible tubing and sheet metal construction.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs HVACR units including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs computerized electronic, pneumatic, and direct digital control (DDC) devices related to HVACR control.
  • Maintains and makes operating repairs on electrical equipment and appliances, on oil and gas equipment, on refrigerators / freezers and ice makers, and on other refrigeration equipment.
  • Operates and keeps in good working order a variety of equipment including hand tools, mobile electronic devices, measuring/diagnostic/testing meters and instruments.
  • Conserves, installs, recycles, and reclaims refrigerants.
  • Reads and interprets complex blueprints, sketches, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Performs brazing, silver and lead soldering, pipe fitting, welding and fabrication as required.
  • Performs various carpentry, masonry, painting, and plastering work as required
  • Coordinates repairs with other trades affected by HVAC operations.
  • Assists in furniture and event set ups and breakdowns, decorations for special functions, meetings, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the normal scope of the department's responsibilities and the individual's capabilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • HS diploma or equivalent and current documentation indicating current successful completion of formal training classes or programs and be able to exhibit acceptable life experiences in HVACR work
  • Possess EPA Universal/R410A license.
  • A minimum of ten years of service in the trade.
  • Possess and maintain personal hand tools required for the trade. Must be able to use a multimeter.
  • Must have the ability to research information, from various sources, to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment i.e. campus technical manuals, as built prints, equipment supply distributors, and internet websites, etc.
  • Must have the ability to recover, recycle, and reclaim refrigerants adhering to HVAC/R industry standards, specifications, and protocols.
