Position Description
Reporting to the Director of Plant Operations, the Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of electrical, mechanical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, carpentry, general maintenance, and preventive maintenance tasks, including all facets of maintenance and new construction duties.
Position Responsibilities- Assumes a leadership role in the maintenance, troubleshooting, repairing, monitoring, and installation of plumbing and HVAC equipment and systems as well as installation and coordination of work utilizing outside contractors and vendors.
- Executes the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair work on electrical, plumbing, mechanical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment as assigned.
- Treats each member of the campus community with fairness, dignity, and respect, embodying caring, compassion, justice, and competence.
- Monitors repairs and troubleshoots boilers, air handlers, pumps, cooling towers, drains, package HVAC units, energy management systems, sprinkler systems, water distribution and sanitary sewer systems.
- Installs plumbing and HVAC equipment for new construction, renovation, repair and remodeling projects.
- Organizes, schedules and completes work requests as assigned.
- Responsible for preventive maintenance (PM) of all equipment, taking a primary role on PM tasks for plumbing and HVAC systems including testing, maintaining backflow prev enters, sprinkler systems, boilers, and related equipment, with proper recording and documentation.
- Maintains university vehicles and position‑related tools and equipment; maintains work areas in field and shop orderly and clean, ensuring a safe work area.
- Responds to on‑call coverage as required within a rotating schedule.
- Collaborates with lead mechanics and the Director of Plant Operations to itemize, estimate and prepare material requests for jobs and projects.
- Maintains professional growth by attending educational, technical, and training programs, seminars, and courses.
- Maintains an accurate record of time for payroll and, if needed, cost distribution.
- Initiates new work orders for additional work or tasks identified during field inspections or while completing work orders.
- Maintains condensate collection pans ensuring proper drainage and treatment.
- Leads and participates proactively in energy conservation initiatives.
- Possesses and provides basic position‑related personal hand tools.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Basic trade knowledge in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration.
- Five or more years of total experience in mechanical trades, with two or more years plumbing experience and two or more years experience as an HVAC technician; experience as a lead mechanic or demonstration of ability to perform duties as a mechanical craftsman is desired.
- Vocational, trade or technical school training is beneficial.
- Experience in leading a mechanical project or a mechanical maintenance team is beneficial.
- Valid PA driver’s license.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other maintenance, technical, university staff, and contractor personnel.
- Strong written, oral, organizational and basic computer skills.
- Detail oriented with ability to manage work requests and projects.
- Ability to work without direct supervision.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools and climb ladders and use a 32‑foot aerial lift safely.
