Position: Physical Plant Mechanic - Access (PHYS PLT MECH)
Location: Davis

Student Housing maintenance staff perform preventive maintenance and repairs on buildings managed by Student Housing in order to maintain an excellent living and learning environment for our residents. Mechanics are expected to systematically maintain and proactively inspect buildings and departmental equipment; to respond to equipment failure, power outages and door security; and to perform access control, door hardware and video surveillance hardware maintenance and repairs as appropriate for a generalist (mechanical, electrical, plumbing and carpentry).

Customer service is a significant responsibility and requires a cooperative teamwork philosophy to create a working environment that stimulates the development of new services and innovative approaches to improve existing services. Incumbents are expected to understand and enforce University policies and procedures, will be held accountable for meeting established expectations, and will be responsible for the physical integrity and accountability for all assigned material, equipment, and assets.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • Associate of Arts degree or related field and/or equivalent experience or training.
  • Experience in performing service/repair tasks and preventive maintenance on door hardware, electronic and mechanical access control (lock/latch) systems and video surveillance systems.
  • Knowledge to understand and communicate technical data, mechanical and structural specifications, blueprints, schematics, diagrams and craft terminology to colleagues and vendors regarding repairs and building access systems.
  • Interpersonal and oral communication skills to explain repair problems, repairs made, transfer messages, explain repair methodology and train staff and student assistants.
  • Customer service skills, which include ability to follow through on customer requests to resolve problems, answer questions, follow through on customer requests, explain processes to resolve building access control (lock/latch) problems and ability to use available resources and references.
  • Skills and ability using common hand and power tools safely and effectively, including electrical testing devices in accordance with trade shop safety regulations and procedures.
  • Ability working successfully as part of a team, independently, or under direct supervisor to complete renovations and/or repairs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as asbestos and/or lead maintenance or remediation worker.
  • Demonstrated skills in door hardware, electronic access control and video surveillance systems.
  • Ability to make prompt and appropriate decisions under emergency conditions.
  • Experience with computers and typing skills to operate a personal computer, use email, and operate other software programs and mobile devices needed to perform job functions.
  • Skill/Knowledge to perform repairs and preventive maintenance on mechanical and electrical access control (lock/latch) systems and video surveillance systems.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with others to secure necessary information and cooperation from a variety of individuals that enable the incumbent to conduct effective negotiations and resolve conflicts, including research skills to identify and validate organizational and business activities and programs.

Department Overview

The Facilities Services unit is one of 6 major units within the SHDS Department. Facilities Services oversees all the daily maintenance, major maintenance, preventive maintenance, custodial services, capital projects and painting for SHDS. Facilities Services encompass approximately 1.9 million square feet and over 100 residential, dining, and administrative buildings.
