This is responsible journeyman level maintenance and repair work for vehicles and equipment. The role involves safe and effective maintenance and routine repair of light trucks, grounds equipment, police vehicles, and associated machinery. Duties include repairing brakes, exhausts, engines, tires, oil changes, lubrications, and preventive maintenance. The employee makes standard vehicle and equipment maintenance decisions in accordance with established procedures and must possess good knowledge, skill, and ability in vehicle and equipment maintenance and routine repair.
Responsibilities- Diagnose and identify vehicle and equipment malfunctions, determine corrective actions through tests and inspections, test vehicles and equipment after repairs and verify completion to ensure quality service delivery.
- Repair brakes, exhausts and related components, tune engines, and perform routine repairs on automobiles and trucks. Assist Fleet Mechanic I and II or Fleet Crew Leader with more difficult repairs or heavy equipment repairs.
- Repair or overhaul engines, transmissions, gear trains, differentials, steering/brake/clutch/electrical systems, power takeoffs, hydraulic and pneumatic lifts and controls, and related components. Perform maintenance on vehicle and equipment.
- Brazes or welds sheet metal and various equipment components such as hoppers and plows.
- Perform state inspections, emissions inspections, and routine and preventive maintenance, if current certifications are in order.
- Perform preventive maintenance, in‑service inspections, and field operational evaluations, as necessary.
- Change and repair tires as necessary.
- Perform work in a safe manner and observe all safety procedures.
- Use all tools, equipment, and materials responsibly and perform basic inspection and preventive maintenance prior to use.
- Complete job or shift report forms as assigned.
- Perform electronic data entry of vehicle and equipment repair information through a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
- Perform related work as required.
- Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent; or be 16 years old or older and currently enrolled in an eligible Vocational/Technical School participating in a Co‑Op program (proof of enrollment required).
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of tools, equipment, and methods for vehicle and equipment overhaul and repair.
- Knowledge of work standards and safety procedures in vehicle and equipment overhaul and repair.
- Skill in using mechanic’s tools.
- Ability to perform vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair safely, effectively, and efficiently.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co‑workers.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, learn Township procedures, and communicate orally.
- Good ability to complete forms and charts.
- Physical requirements:
stand for 1–8 hours, walk for 1–8 hours, drive for 1–8 hours per workday; bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, lift, push/pull; climb, crawl, reach above shoulder level; lift and carry up to 50 pounds for 68% of the workday and up to 100 pounds for 35% of the workday; use both feet for foot controls; use both hands for simple, firm, and fine manipulation of tools. - Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions around moving machinery and in challenging environmental conditions.
