THE POSITIONThe Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic position with the Department of Transportation is a great opportunity to support safe and reliable equipment operations. This role allows you to work with a wide range of vehicles and machinery used in daily maintenance work. You will complete repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance that is essential in keeping our operations running smoothly. This position offers steady hands‑on work and a chance to strengthen your mechanical skills.
DESCRIPTIONOF WORK
This position maintains and repairs diesel and gasoline-powered equipment to support safe and efficient maintenance operations. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:
- Equipment Repair: Repair vehicles, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment used in maintenance operations
- Preventative Work: Carry out scheduled maintenance, diagnostics, and adjustments on engines and mechanical systems
- Safety Inspections: Perform official state inspections and complete required documentation for assigned vehicles
- Problem Diagnosis: Identify equipment issues using diagnostic tools and determine repair methods
- Tool Operation: Repair and maintain motorized hand equipment such as chain saws, compressors and trimmers
- Workplace Safety: Maintain a clean work area and follow all safety procedures to protect self and coworkers

Work Schedule and Additional Information- Full‑time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,607 (before taxes).

Qualities
- Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration);
or - Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment;
or - An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- This position requires possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License.
- This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
- This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) within the probationary period.
- This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
- A conditional offer of employment will require a drug screening.
