Job Purpose and Summary

This is skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of wooden and metal articles, equipment and structures at various locations for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). An employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled tasks in accordance with standard practices of the carpentry trade. Work is assigned and reviewed by a supervisor for completion and compliance with specifications and standards.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

General carpentry work in the installation, repair, alteration and maintenance of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, screens, windows, scaffolding, concrete forms, wood fixtures and furniture.

Operates power saws, jointers, wood lathes, planers, borers, sanders and other associated shop equipment.

Cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools.

Estimates and enters time and materials required for assigned tasks and maintains simple records.

Operates power equipment and hand tools in carpentry shop.

Ensures compliance with building, health and safety codes and standards.

Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches and prints.

Utilizes a PTC radio system for transmitting and receiving information.

Uses and properly maintains tools and equipment of the carpenter trade.

Must be available 24/7/365 for emergency response.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent certification.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Completion of carpentry technical training at an accredited technical school and three (3) years of experience in carpentry;
OR
five (5) years of documented carpentry experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Position demands include frequent speaking, writing and reading reports. Position may demand occasionally working long hours in emergency situations, adverse weather conditions or for extended work assignments. Frequently lifts and carries up to 20 pounds of equipment, materials and tools. Occasionally lifts up to 150 pounds without assistance of a heavy lifting device. Works overhead or in a bending, squatting or kneeling position.

Position requires frequent travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Office environment with low levels of noise, adequate lighting and comfortable temperature. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable conditions. Works in extreme weather conditions. May work in a confined space or on uneven surfaces to facilitate repairs. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
