Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic

This position focuses on repairing, maintaining and inspecting diesel and gasoline powered equipment used in highway operations. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

• Equipment Repair: Repair vehicles and equipment including engines, brakes, transmissions, and electrical components
• Preventative Work: Perform diagnostics, tune ups, and scheduled maintenance to keep equipment functioning properly
• State Inspections: Complete official safety and emissions inspections and prepare required documentation
• Diagnostic Tasks: Use diagnostic tools to identify equipment problems and determine proper repair methods
• Safety Practices: Maintain clean work areas, follow safety procedures, and report any injuries or equipment issues
• Field Adjustments: Make necessary adjustments, perform minor repairs, and support other mechanics during major repair projects

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM, or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
• May require travel, overtime, and dual shifts. Work hours may vary during winter season.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,607 (before taxes).

• Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

• This position requires possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed.
• All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
• This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period.
• This position required employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

• This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
• Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
• This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
