Job Description

Mentor Role:

  • To provide guidance and supervision, and to act as a positive adult role model to a young male adult.
  • To understand and administer client's written treatment plan as required and to work with client first to resolve any issues. The plan was authored by the treatment team in conjunction with the client and specifies his good faith commitment to abide by the established rules and guidelines.
  • To assist client with accountability, organization of school and treatment related assignments and materials, calendar planning, time management, home management skills, community service projects and overall implementation of his full-time program.
  • To monitor the client in all activities both in and outside of the home and school.
  • To provide transportation for the client when needed.
  • To chaperone the client to outside social events, activities, family vacations or other functions as deemed necessary.
  • To assist family consultant in delivering didactic and experiential education sessions that teach daily living skills, social skills, cognitive restructuring, building self confidence, motivational skills, alternative coping skills and other skills as needed.
  • To work in collaboration with biological parents, clinical staff and family consultant in all aspects of duties and responsibilities.
  • Take the lead in supporting a young male through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship.
  • Serve as a positive role model and friend.
  • Build the relationship by planning and participating in activities together. Client is very athletic i.e. running, basketball and other sport activities.
  • Strive for mutual respect.
  • Build self-esteem and motivation.
  • Help set goals and work toward accomplishing them.

Competencies required.

  • Desire and willingness to work for the betterment of the community, families, and youth
  • Use of a conceptual framework for human development and related problems.
  • Ability to develop alliances and maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize de-escalation skills in a volatile situation.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally and use e-mail, text messages, social networking websites.
  • Excellent organizational skills, familiarity with systems to assist individuals with community resources I special needs a plus.
  • Be health conscious, athletic and in good shape. Client is also requesting a male mentor that can participate in his athletic interest.
  • Knowledge of and understanding of the federal confidentiality requirements.
  • Ability to provide transportation to the client.

Time Commitment

  • Make a minimum of a one-year commitment/ninety days probation.
  • Spend constructive one-to-one time with a mentee up to twice a week.
  • Communicate with the mentee weekly.
  • Document in writing, time spent with Client each day. (Best Notes)
  • Attend an initial orientation and training session and any/all additional hands‑on training/supervision sessions monthly during participation in the program.
  • Attend any additional mentor/mentee group events, mentor support groups, and program recognition events.

Participation Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • High School Diploma
  • Be interested in working with young people.
  • Be willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures.
  • Be willing to complete the application and screening process.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $23.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours:
No less than 15 per week
