About the job

The Chan Soon-Shiong Institute of Molecular Medicine at Windber (wriwindber.org) is seeking a Bioinformatics Engineer to support cancer research and data-driven discovery. This cross-functional role bridges the Bioinformatics and Biomedical Informatics Infrastructure departments and is responsible for developing, deploying, and integrating experimental data into software platforms for visualization and analysis of large-scale cancer datasets.

The Bioinformatics Department provides analytical and computational support for institute operations and translational research. The Biomedical Informatics Infrastructure Department supports daily operations and biomedical informatics research with advanced data systems and tools.

This position requires strong technical expertise, bioinformatics knowledge, and the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse team of scientists, clinicians, and developers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, deploy, and integrate experimental data into software applications used for visualization and analysis of large-scale cancer datasets.
  • Design and maintain software tools for bioinformatics research and institute operations.
  • Work across departments to support both daily operations and scientific research initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with supervisors, peers, and end users to deliver effective solutions.
  • Contribute to the advancement of bioinformatics and biomedical informatics research at the institute.
Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Life Sciences/Molecular Biology, or related technical field.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience working with genomic and other biological data, with strong knowledge of file formats and data parsing tools.
  • Strong understanding of bioinformatics concepts and software application development.
  • Advanced experience using open-source, web-based applications for large-scale data visualization (e.g., cBioPortal).
  • At least 4 years’ experience developing software tools with programming languages such as C#, Python, R, JavaScript, and SQL.
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies (e.g., AWS) is a plus.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams.
