Position Overview

Start a rewarding career as a PennDOT CDL Operator A with the Department of Transportation. This position lets you learn valuable skills while helping maintain safe highways across the state. You will take on meaningful projects that keep travel safe for the public.

Description of Work

In this position, you will play an important role in supporting highway and bridge maintenance by operating equipment and completing hands‑on work. The work you will do helps keep roadways safe for the public and supports essential transportation services.

  • Equipment Operation:
    Operate trucks, loaders, and other assigned equipment for highway and bridge maintenance.
  • License Compliance:
    Maintain a valid CDL and complete required certifications and equipment checks.
  • Traffic Control:
    Perform flagger duties to guide traffic safely around work zones when not using equipment.
  • Manual Labor:
    Use a variety of hand tools and motorized tools to complete tasks such as clearing culverts, cutting brush, and repairing guiderails.
  • Maintenance Work:
    Make field adjustments, perform minor repairs, and assist mechanics with equipment servicing to permit safe operation and minimize wear.
Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full‑time employment.
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch.
  • Work shifts will vary seasonally, due to weather, or based on operational needs.
  • Telework:
    You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary:
    Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $44,988 (before taxes).

Qualifications
  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • Must possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
  • Employees may require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
Additional Requirements
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
