Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) seeks a dockworker to deliver customers' freight accurately and on time while ensuring safety, compliance with state and federal guidelines, and supporting warehouse operations.
Primary Responsibilities- Load and unload freight on trailers using motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manual methods.
- Apply loading techniques such as tight, cross-loading, and secure freight with airbags, straps, cards, and other supplies.
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and the Dock Yard Management System.
- Read and interpret shipping labels, and complete required forms (shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports, exception forms).
- Rewrap, stack, or hand‑load freight as necessary.
- Maintain quality loading of all trailers, ensuring correct positioning and securing of freight.
- Transport freight continuously within the service center and communicate with service‑center personnel in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with safe and efficient lifting and transporting procedures.
- Knowledge of loading techniques, including tight and cross loading.
- Ability to complete freight movement forms and use the Dock Yard Management System for shipment tracking.
- Availability to work as required to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- Proficiency with handheld tablets.
- Strong command of English for reading, writing, and speaking.
- May need to stand for up to 8 hours, walk on non‑forgiving surfaces, and reach for items up to shoulder height.
- Lift, push, pull, and load freight up to 500lb. and operate forklifts.
- Work in hot or cold climates, with noise, odors, and varying light conditions.
- Perform tasks involving bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing.
- Attend shift schedules including mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.
Employees may work in enclosed vans or trailers, be exposed to all weather conditions, and operate in varying light and noise levels while loading and unloading freight in a busy cross‑dock environment.
