Position Responsibilities and Qualifications
- Obtain and maintain a Waterworks Operators Class A license with all required modules. Employees have 3 years to obtain the license; failure to obtain it within 3 years will result in termination.
- Waterworks license requirements include a written test; the license is not required until experience requirements are met.
- Entry‑level employees must hold an associate degree, or two years of trade school or similar education; alternatively, two years of experience in waterworks or a related field requiring mechanical, treatment, and/or mathematical skills.
- Perform labor‑intensive work, including lifting up to 75 pounds.
- Meet and follow all Aqua safety requirements for hazardous chemical handling and PPE.
- Demonstrate strong mechanical skills for repair and replacement of plant equipment, including pumps, instruments, and chemical feed equipment.
- Make mathematical calculations to determine chemical doses required for flow rates and proper treatment.
- Be available for overtime as needed to maintain continuous plant operations.
- Hold a valid U.S. driver’s license. The position requires a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class C with a Hazardous Material Endorsement, and the employee awarded the job must obtain the CDL within the required time period.
- Within 60 days of award of the job, pass required knowledge testing and obtain a learner’s permit.
- Within 120 additional days, secure a CDL with necessary endorsements.
- Failure to secure a CDL within 120 days will result in loss of the position.
- Be a member of the Hazmat Response Team if the team is maintained.
- Under Federal Highway Administration Regulation 49 CFR Part 382, employees required to hold a CDL are subject to:
- Random drug and alcohol testing
- Reasonable suspicion testing
- Post-accident testing involving loss of life and/or citation for a moving violation
- Return-to-duty testing
- Bi-annual medical certification (physical examination)
- Obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate as required by the United States Department of Transportation governing Physical Qualifications and Examinations, SUBPART E Article 391.41, before starting in the position.
The hourly rate of pay is $38.91.
All employees hired or entering the bargaining unit on or after December 15, 2022, will receive a wage reduction of $4.00 per hour. The wage reduction will be returned in $1.00 increases once a year over a four (4) year period. Employee will receive annual contract increases.
Employees must be employed for more than twelve (12) months in a Department to be eligible to apply for a job outside the Department. However, employees with twelve (12) months or more in the union but with less than twelve (12) months in a Department may apply for a job classification that pays a higher hourly rate.
An employee will be limited to two higher wage classification advancements in a twelve (12) month period. If there are no applicants with more than the required twelve (12) months in the department, then employees with at least 12 months in the bargaining unit may apply for the position even if it is not for a higher wage classification.
