Transportation Dispatcher
The Transportation Dispatcher provides support within the student transportation section with specific responsibilities for scheduling of bus drivers and bus aides; coordinates the assignments of regularly scheduled routes, special events, field trips, and sports trips; monitors staff assignments, attendance, and locations. Supervises 140+ drivers and aides on a daily basis, who are based at three separate locations, to insure all transportation requirements are met.
Qualifications:
Associate degree desired or equivalent work experience. Minimum five years experience in school transportation environment; dispatching experience preferred. Previous experience in complex problem solving using critical thinking skills to review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. Must be able to multitask. Ability to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of transportation scheduling patterns; ability to express ideas clearly both orally and in writing.
Thorough knowledge of the geography of the District and surrounding area. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Transportation Department administrators, bus drivers, bus aides, mechanics, office and school staff. Ability to work with others in a team environment within an organization that has multiple lines of authority. Demonstrate proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office products, and knowledge of transportation software such as Bus Boss, Zonar, and School Dude.
Demonstrate professionalism through punctuality and consistent and reliable attendance; ability to handle confidential matters in an ethical manner.
- Must be familiar with all 100+ regular bus routes, to include special needs and non-public schools outside LMSD.
- Dispatches bus drivers and assigns substitute drivers as needed for the purpose of ensuring that all routes are covered for the timely transportation of students.
- Effectively communicate through two-way radio and telephone.
- Must react to unexpected changes in daily operations: personnel absences, vehicle breakdowns and accidents, by analyzing shortfalls and assigning appropriate resources.
- Maintain a daily log of all substitute driver work assignments.
- Monitor timekeeping system; keep a record of drivers and aides who clock in late.
- Routinely field parent/motorist/school calls and emails regarding driver issues
- Maintain a high level of customer service satisfaction
- React to changes in trips by assigning additional assets and covering unexpected absences, often after hours and on weekends.
- Manage snow removal at all Transportation depots
- On call for emergencies
- Serve as an active member of the management team
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation
Hours are 5:00am-2:00pm. This is a 12 month position.
