What You'll Do

As a Rail Service Technician, you will perform locomotive fueling and servicing tasks that help ensure locomotives are safe, compliant, and ready for operation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform daily locomotive inspections required by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Load traction sand, potable water, and lube oil
  • Verify and replenish locomotive fluid levels as needed
  • Operate truck-mounted service equipment and controls
  • Stock locomotives with bottled water and crew supply packs
  • Maintain locomotive cabs and restrooms by removing trash and wiping down surfaces
  • Evacuate and properly dispose of locomotive toilet waste using approved servicing equipment and designated disposal procedures
  • Follow all company, railroad, DOT, and safety procedures
  • Loading, transporting, and transferring red-dyed diesel into trains on an "on-call" basis for the Railroad.
  • Safely fuel locomotives using specialized fueling equipment
  • Stick fuel tanks and monitor fuel levels
  • Pull fuel hoses and operate and lift fuel nozzles
  • Perform required inspections and documentation
  • Work safely around active rail equipment
  • Scheduled runs between Allentown, Philadelphia, and Baltimore
What Makes This Different From Traditional Trucking

Approximately 90–95% of the work is performed outside the truck. This is a hands-on railroad position where you'll work directly with locomotives in a railyard using specialized equipment, lifting and pulling hoses, and climbing in and out of your truck or climbing locomotive steps multiple times per shift. You will be working outside in all types of weather.

Because railroad operations run continuously, dispatches may occur at any time during your scheduled shift. You are paid for your full 12-hour shift, including breaks, lunch, and wait time.

Requirements
  • Valid Class A CDL
  • Valid DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate (Med Card)
  • FMCSA Clearinghouse compliant
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
  • Ability to pass company, customer, railroad, and government background checks
  • Strong safety focus and reliability
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Must live within 40 miles of Allentown, PA
Physical & Work Environment

This position requires working outdoors around active railroad operations.

Candidates should be comfortable with:

  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Walking on paved, uneven, and rail yard surfaces
  • Climbing locomotive steps and entering/exiting equipment
  • Handling hoses, tools, and service equipment
  • Performing routine servicing tasks
  • Lifting and carrying materials up to 50 pounds
