Position Summary

The Transportation Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the safe, efficient, reliable, and cost-effective transportation of the district's public, nonpublic/private, special education, and other eligible student populations.

The Transportation Supervisor serves as the district's authorized representative for student transportation matters and works closely with contracted transportation providers, District administrators, school personnel, families, the Intermediate Unit, outside educational programs, and regulatory agencies. The Transportation Supervisor exercises independent judgment in transportation decisions, following consultation with the Director of Business and transportation contractors when appropriate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Transportation Operations and Routing

  • Plan, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate the district's daily student transportation operations.
  • Work with contracted transportation providers to develop and maintain safe and efficient bus routes, stops, schedules, vehicle assignments, and student loading plans.
  • Coordinate transportation for public, nonpublic/private, kindergarten, special education, career and technical education, alternative education, and other eligible students.
  • Coordinate specialized transportation services for students attending Intermediate Unit programs, approved private schools, and other out-of-district placements.
  • Collaborate with the Intermediate Unit and appropriate District personnel to determine student transportation eligibility and service requirements.
  • Review proposed bus stops and routes for safety, efficiency, travel time, vehicle capacity, and compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Monitor student ridership and bus load counts throughout the school year and communicate necessary adjustments to schools, families, drivers, and transportation contractors.
  • Monitor residential development, enrollment changes, school boundary changes, road construction, and other factors that may affect current or future transportation needs.
  • Coordinate transportation for athletic events, field trips, extracurricular activities, and other District-approved travel.
  • Maintain open communication with transportation contractors concerning routes, staffing, student assignments, service needs, and operational concerns.
  • Ride District-contracted vehicles periodically to observe routes, loading procedures, student conduct, and general transportation operations.
  • Student Records and Scheduling

  • Maintain accurate transportation records, including student names, addresses, telephone numbers, school assignments, emergency information, bus assignments, stops, and special transportation requirements.
  • Establish and maintain procedures for annually updating student transportation information and processing changes involving student addresses, schools, grade levels, programs, or transportation needs.
  • Maintain current bus rosters and distribute them to authorized schools, drivers, contractors, and staff as appropriate.
  • Provide transportation schedules and route information to District schools and other authorized recipients before the opening of school and throughout the year as changes occur.
  • Use student information systems, routing software, GPS information, databases, spreadsheets, and other technology to maintain accurate records and improve transportation services.
  • Protect the confidentiality of student information and transportation records in accordance with applicable laws and District policies.
  • Safety, Emergency Preparedness, and Compliance

  • Develop, implement, administer, and periodically review procedures that promote the safe, orderly, and efficient operation of the district's transportation program.
  • Serve as the District's primary contact for school transportation emergencies and coordinate notification of administrators, families, emergency responders, law enforcement, and other appropriate parties.
  • Develop, distribute, and annually review procedures for bus accidents, vehicle breakdowns, severe weather, evacuations, delayed routes, missing students, and other transportation emergencies.
  • Coordinate and document required school bus evacuation drills in accordance with Section 1517 of the Pennsylvania Public School Code and other applicable requirements.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with applicable federal and state laws, Pennsylvania Department of Education regulations, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation requirements, Board policies, contracts, and District procedures.
  • Maintain or verify required transportation documentation, including driver qualifications, licenses, training records, physical examinations, clearances, driving records, and other legally required records.
  • Review accident and incident reports, investigate transportation-related safety concerns, and recommend corrective action when appropriate.
