This is professional level work in coordination and performance activities of environmental programs, compliance review and inspection of environmentally affected sites, implementation of land management activities and environmental site evaluation, environmental regulation research, field sampling and testing, hazardous materials collection or management, and public education activities as well as recordkeeping and data collection. This position may supervise Environmental Technicians and reports to an Environmental Analyst or the Division Manager.
This is a mandatory-testing position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIESServes as technical expert to other staff, including the Environmental Technicians, by remaining knowledgeable of compliance and regulations as well as serving in a lead role when needed
Ensures compliance with applicable codes and ordinances by reviewing project plans, specifications, and permit applications
Evaluates and tracks environmental data by performing field collection of environmental samples, documenting data, and preparing summary reports, including tables, charts, spreadsheets, maps, and databases
Ensures regulation compliance by conducting periodic inspections of areas, facilities, and activities that come under environmental regulation and by reviewing permits and compliance status
Operates motor vehicles, machinery, and small equipment according to standard operating procedures in order to conduct field tests and measurements, inspections, and investigations to obtain data for use in determining code compliance as well as sources of and methods for controlling environmental pollutants
Analyzes various environmental data by collecting, aggregating, and evaluating data
May perform land acquisition and stewardship activities by assisting with controlled burns, field inspections, and environmental monitoring
Performs other duties as assigned
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONSTraining and
Experience:
Associate degree in an environmental or physical science or related field and two years of experience in an environmental, solid waste management, or conservation related field; or, a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Licenses andCertifications:
Must possess a valid driver’s license from state of residence
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics (KSAO's):applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, environmental regulations, codes, and statutes on environmental regulations
basic mathematical concepts (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages)
applicable field and scientific tools and equipment utilized in area of responsibility
principles and practices of assigned environmental area
safety principles
customer service principles
using a computer and applicable software programs (i.e. Microsoft Office Suites)
using applicable field and scientific tools and equipment in assigned area of responsibility providing customer service
communication and interpersonal relations as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
collect, comply, and interpret data and document findings
follow standard operating procedures
compile routine reports and maintain accurate records
operate applicable field monitoring and sampling equipment
follow hazardous waste safety and emergency procedures, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other governmental agencies, and the general public
communicate effectively both orally and in writing
learn other proprietary software application used to operate field and scientific equipment
