Job Description
The Sterile Processing Supervisor works under the supervision of the Sterile Processing Department Manager. The Supervisor has the responsibility, authority and accountability for the clinical, quality, safety, financial, and personnel management of the unit on a 24 hour basis. He/she ensures overall sterilization process the standards set forth by regulatory agencies, i.e., ACHA, CDC, CMS, Joint Commission, and Department of Health including all documentation requirements;
responsible for taking immediate action when there is a breakdown in sterilization process; ensures procedures and standards of practice are followed for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of reusable supplies and equipment;
He/she/he directs and guides activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing practice; provides for a safe, clean and organized environment. Utilizes effective organizational, decision and problem solving skills in own practice and when supervising others.
Responsible for overseeing and supervising the sterile processing areas supporting perioperative services and coordinating the reprocessing of and delivery of items to other areas within the health care organization.
Responsible for following all Federal and State mandates regarding sterilization including documentation.
Demonstrates compliance with the standards set by regulatory agencies, i.e., ACHA, CDC, CMS, JCAHO, and Department of Health including all documentation requirements.
Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the sterilization process; responsible for taking immediate action when there is a breakdown in the process of sterilization until complete resolution is achieved and for notifying appropriate persons.
Ensures established procedures and standards of practice are followed for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of reusable supplies and equipment; ensures all safety checks are in place and that others are following the process accurately.
Provides environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of errors by providing staff with a comprehensive departmental orientation to all new Sterile Processing personnel; provides staff with required training on an ongoing basis.
Responsible for Sterile Processing Operations and outcomes.
Complies with regulatory, accrediting, and hospital policy for environmental and personnel safety.
Manages Sterile Processing Equipment assets.
Responsible for Surgical Services Inventory.
Meets with Sales Representatives regularly and in accordance with hospital rules and regulations.
Responsible for department’s operational excellence; ensures department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
Responsible for the departmental staffing and resource management - utilization of FTEs - all facets.
Supervises team members which include orientation, development and evaluation of personnel, and monitoring the provision of delivering quality services. Participates in the recruiting, interviewing and selecting of team members following policies, guidelines and applicable laws. Evaluates their performance relative to job goals and requirements. Provides coaching to staff, recommends in-service education programs, and ensures adherence to internal policies and standards.
Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure. Pursues professional growth and development.
Assist in other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department and organization.
May be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.
QualificationsHigh School Diploma or Equivalent Required and
Technical Diploma/Certificate
2 years Surgical Technologist/SPD experience Required
Licenses and CertificationsCertified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCS) within 1 Year Required or
Central Supply Processing Department Technician (CSPDT) within 1 Year Required
Required Skills, Knowledge and AbilitiesKnowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, equipment and supply management and decontamination of equipment with demonstrated competency.
Ability to read and understand the English Language.
Strong attention to detail, organizational and follow through skills required.
