The Role
The Senior Web Developer is a hands‑on role within the Bionews Technology department, reporting to the Director of Technology. This position is focused on the development, optimization, and maintenance of our Word Press‑based digital platforms. The ideal candidate is passionate about coding, has a deep understanding of Word Press, and is eager to dive into both frontend and backend development to ensure our platforms deliver superior digital experiences.

Responsibilities- Develop, optimize, and maintain a large network of Word Press sites, ensuring scalability, security, and performance.
- Write production‑quality code across themes and plugins, including custom post types, Advanced Custom Fields (ACF), and custom integrations.
- Collaborate with the technology team to implement and maintain analytics, advertising, and data integrations (GA4, Google Tag Manager, Google Ad Manager, etc.).
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across the Word Press stack, from PHP and MySQL to JavaScript and frontend rendering.
- Contribute to architectural decisions, code reviews, and development standards to promote best practices across the platform.
- Integrate dynamic content, third‑party APIs, and interactive features within the Word Press ecosystem.
- Leverage automation and develop AI‑powered tools to improve workflows, content delivery, analytics, and platform capabilities.
- Stay current with Word Press, web development, and AI trends, applying new ideas thoughtfully to production systems.
- Partner cross‑functionally with editorial, product, data, and operations teams to ensure technical solutions align with business and editorial goals.
- Extensive hands‑on experience with Word Press development and a strong portfolio of production work.
- Strong proficiency in PHP (including Timber & Twig), HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MySQL, and modern frontend practices.
- Experience working with cloud‑based and data‑centric platforms, such as Git Hub, Google Cloud Platform, New Relic, GA4, Big Query, data warehouses, CDPs, and advertising technologies.
- Comfort working with AI‑powered tools, APIs, and automation frameworks.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to independently own complex technical challenges.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience collaborating on a fully remote team.
- A proactive mindset and genuine interest in learning, experimenting, and improving systems over time.
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field preferred (or equivalent practical experience).
- Experience working in digital media, publishing, or content‑driven platforms is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver high‑quality, well‑tested code in a fast‑paced environment.
- Deep understanding of Word Press architecture, performance optimization, and development best practices.
