Job Description

This position requires a highly skilled Master Radio Technician to operate, maintain, and support a Motorola P25 trunked radio system spanning 6 remote sites and approximately 5,600 APX subscriber units. It is a senior, largely self-directed role responsible for minimizing vendor dependency while maximizing system uptime and subscriber satisfaction. Extensive infrastructure knowledge, strong subscriber management skills, and the judgment to determine when to address issues independently or escalate them to the supervisor.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Radio System Manager. Performance is evaluated through observation, results obtained, oral/written reports, and appropriate employee performance appraisals.

Examples Of Duties
  • Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot a 6-site 800MHz trunked P25 radio system including site controllers, repeaters, and backhaul connectivity
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance at all remote sites including equipment inspection, battery plant checks, and environmental system awareness
  • Diagnose and resolve site-level alarms and outages with minimal supervision, minimizing reliance on Motorola field service
  • Coordinate with the Radio System Manager on infrastructure upgrades, capacity planning, and vendor interactions when escalation is required
  • Maintain accurate site documentation, as-built records, and equipment inventories
  • Program, configure, and assist maintaining approximately 5,600 Motorola APX portable and mobile radios using Motorola CPS
  • Manage subscriber templates, code plug version control, and fleet-wide programming updates at the direction of the system manager
  • Troubleshoot APX subscriber units and coordinate warranty and out-of-warranty swap-and-return with Motorola as needed
  • Support end users and user group administrators with radio issues, replacements, and training on basic operation
  • Maintain subscriber database and track radio assignments, repairs, and lifecycle status
  • Support talk group management, system configuration changes, and user provisioning within the P25 infrastructure as directed by the system manager.
  • Participate in a required on-call rotation, responding to critical system alarms and outages outside of normal business hours
  • Stay current on Motorola firmware, software updates, and system advisories relevant to the installed infrastructure and APX fleet
Typical Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or GED
- Required

Associate's Degree or better
- Preferred Preferred Major(s):
Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or other related degree

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience with Motorola P25 trunked radio systems in an infrastructure or advanced technician role
  • An Associate's degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience while a Bachelor's degree may substitute for five (5) years of experience
  • Military RF experience desirable
  • Experience with trunked radio systems, system interoperability, electrical systems, radio/telephone circuits, and backhaul/networking preferred
  • Any combination of experience and training that provides the required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:

  • Current, valid Florida Class B or higher driver license, or the ability to obtain such within one (1) year of employment
  • Attend all training required to acquire and maintain the necessary vendor provided certifications to install, maintain, and repair the current inventory of communications and electronic equipment utilized by the Sheriff's Office and other customer agencies

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, and testing/diagnostic devices utilized in radio repair and maintenance
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity and electronics
  • Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of radio repair and maintenance.
  • Experience with GTR
    8000, Quantar, or equivalent P25 infrastructure equipment
  • Familiarity with Smart Zone or Capacity Plus system management tools
  • Motorola dealer or technician certifications
  • R56 standards knowledge for site installation and grounding Demonstrated hands-on experience with Motorola APX subscriber radios including programming via CPS
  • Working knowledge of trunked P25 system architecture including site controllers, RFSSs, and inter-site linking
  • Strong troubleshooting methodology — ability to isolate problems at the system, site, and subscriber level
