Shipfitters Needed

Now hiring shipfitters with 1+ years of shipyard experience to work in the Pensacola Shipyards. Skilled tradesmen who perform the work of developing and laying out, fitting, bolting up, assembling and erecting plate, shapes, and pipe when used to form a part of a structural assembly in connection with ship construction, alteration, and repair specified by blueprints, work orders, or instructions from supervisor or management.

The ship fitter is responsible for building and/or repairing the complete hull of a metal ship. The fitter has the primary responsibility for maintaining its watertight integrity. The ship fitter also manufactures and installs interior and exterior weldments such as:
Bulwarks, Coamings, Doors, Foundations, Gratings, Hawse Pipes, Ladders, Mast, Bulkheads, King Post, Racks, Railing, Sea Chest, Stanchions, Stowages, Tanks, Trunks, Yardarms, and Hull Zincs. The ship fitter repairs and/or removes damage ship structures and fittings, prepares surfaces for welding, burning, riveting and lays out holes for drilling. This work is accomplished using miscellaneous hand and power tools. The ship fitter may also be required to perform as a roll operator, punch operator, shear operator, track burner, drill and saw operator.

The ship fitter may also have to arrange for staging, crane service, ventilation, lighting, and support services (air, electricity, and water). The above description is general in nature. A ship fitter may be required to perform additional duties not specifically described.

Basic tools that are provided by the employee:

  • Tip Cleaner - 12" Combination Square or Speed Square
    - Center Punch
  • Welding Shield
    - Ball Peen Hammer - 24" Carpenter Square
  • Striker w/Flints
    - Crescent Wrench 10" and 6" - Burning Goggles
  • Tape Measure 25' min
    - Safety Toed Shoes
    - Hammer 2 lb.

* Some basic tools can be checked out from the shipyard tool room.

PAY:
Starts at: $25+/hr. (Depending on current level of experience)

SCHEDULE:

MON-THUR 7:30am - 4pm FRIDAY 7:30am
-3pm
* Overtime is typically available but NOT mandatory
* Typical working hours are 40 hours per week. Work that exceeds 40 hours is considered overtime (and paid at "time-and-a-half"). A 10-minute paid morning break is taken at 9:30am daily. A 30-minute unpaid lunch break is provided daily at 11:30am - 12:00pm

ALL NEW HIRES WILL BE REQUIRED TO:

  • Pass a Pre-employment Drug Test
  • Pass a NON-DOT Physical Agility Assessment
  • Complete an OSHA Respirator Questionnaire (completed at clinic during physical)
  • Participate in RANDOM quarterly drug tests

Essential Functions:

I. Essential Function:
Determines the position of structural components, working from blueprints or templates. Will locate specific components (precut & labeled structural members) and may use a scribe to mark reference lines, such as center, and frame lines. Physical Demands:
This worker function requires less physical demands than other essential functions to follow. Essentially, this function is the core of the thinking/planning aspect of the fitter's job. The worker will stand while reviewing blueprints and drawings. Occasional walking is required to locate specific components and markings. Fitter maybe required to move parts on an occasional basis, to locate needed components.

Nothing is to be lifted over 50 lbs. without assistance.

II. Essential Function:
Fitters are responsible for locating parts as specified by blueprints. In most cases, these parts have already been cut and are ready to be fit with other components. Physical Demands:
Standing and walking is required on a frequent basis. Bending, squatting, pulling/pushing, reaching, and handling are also required on a frequent basis. Lifting, carrying and pulling objects requiring 30 to 40 pounds is required on an occasional basis.

II:
Essential Function:
Fitters are required to fit various metal parts into the vessel or module to precise specifications and measurements. The fitter is required to align these part specifications so that a Tacker can tack the parts into place. The fitter may use various tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wedges, torches, clips, shims, various measurement tools such as level, square, and measuring tape.

Fitters are expected to visually inspect all tools

Transportation

It is the responsibility of each individual to provide or arrange his or her own transportation to and from the shipyard.
