Afghan Refugee Housing & Welcoming Navigators

Through We Are All America, a powerful alliance of national and state-based organizations has combined strengths to respond to the willful destruction of the U.S. refugee resettlement program and the heightened anti-refugee, anti-asylum, and anti-Muslim narratives that are influencing political decision making and public opinion.

The WAAA Afghan Refugee Housing & Welcoming Navigators will be Afghan community leaders who will join the WAAA team and lead the following response and welcoming work after receiving proper training in the areas outlined below:

1. Connecting newly arrived Afghan families to key services:
In an effort to support as many families as possible in this critical time, the WAAA Afghan Refugee Housing & Welcoming Navigators will support with:

  • Helping families navigate and access resources for housing and other basic needs
  • Educating families on how to access housing, legal services, and other resources in their communities through local "know your rights and resources" presentations
  • Connecting newcomers with former refugees in order to help support their integration process.
  • Collectively, the Afghan navigator leads and volunteer navigators will aim to reach approximately 3,000-5,000 newly arrived Afghan refugees across the country

2. Support advocacy and policy efforts:
In order to ensure Afghan families are receiving essential needs upon their arrival. WAAA Afghan Refugee Housing & Welcoming Navigators will:

  • Engage local city, county, and state officials in order to advocate for resources around access to immediate needs, such as; affordable housing, workforce development programs, transportation, internet access, and other immediate needs.
  • Support local resettlement efforts of agencies tasked with initial resettlement by helping to advocate for the needs of newly arrived refugees.
  • Identify challenges around access for housing and other basic needs work with stakeholders in order to address barriers and build alliances with housing partners.

3. Community Leadership Development:
Afghan Housing & Welcoming Navigator train a Local Team

  • The lead Afghan Refugee Housing and Welcoming Navigator will work to build a small team (3-5 leaders) of local navigators in an effort to expand outreach and assistance to the Afghan community.
  • This lead Navigator will provide training to their local team and support them in outreach and community education
  • Each local Navigator local team will aim to reach 1,500 families, who will disseminate housing and welcoming information to the community

4. Develop partnerships:
With local institutions to increase support and services for refugees.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in working with Afghan communities, and community advocacy and organizing
  • Bilingual in English and Pashto/Dari is required
  • Self-starter- able to take on tasks with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with people of diverse social, faith, economic and racial/ethnic backgrounds
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, and organization skills
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills
  • Proficient knowledge of Gmail features
    - Internet required
  • Bachelor's Degree is preferred
  • Willingness to work flexible hours; evenings and weekends required
  • A commitment to social justice, and experience working with and in diverse low-income communities and communities of color
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on multiple projects
  • Access to a car, valid driver's license and insurance, and ability to travel within the metropolitan area and sometimes out of state
